Stain on ceiling- does this look it could be a leak somewhere?

I’ve just noticed the start of a faint stain coming through on the ceiling- does this look it could be the start of a leak somewhere?

it’s below the first floor landing which seems a bit of an odd place to me but I’m not diy savvy in the slightest 😅

Is it coming from a decomposing body?

Is there a bathroom off the landing upstairs? I had a water dripping through my heat detector in the kitchen recently which was coming from my upstairs bathroom, even though its not directly above the kitchen. Water travels in mysterious ways...

@TheCadoganArms hopefully not but it’s a persimmon new build so I wouldn’t be surprised 😂

@Scotsgirl001 yes the bathroom is sort of opposite and to the right of the stain over the lounge- the stain is nearer the stairs but I suppose the water could have travelled! It’s weird because it looks like the start of a water stain but doesn’t feel damp when I touch it

The leak could be further along the pipe but the water droplets are travelling along the pipe, perhaps there is a small dip in the pipe above where that stain is. I’d be taking up the carpet/floorboards directly above to have a look.

Water tracks all over the place then drips through at a weak or lower point. It is no good just seeking the source directly above the stain.

I can't see the stain you're looking at, sorry, just the plasterboard join, but agree with the above that water doesn't necessarily come through where you'd expect, so monitor closely.

If it's a new build can you get the company to fix it?

sleekcat · 23/05/2024 14:23

I can just about see it. It looks the same as a stain I had. Mine didn't feel damp either but I'm not sure how long it was there before I noticed it. When it dries the stain doesn't go away unless you paint it. Mine was caused by a bath tap not being sealed properly and water from the shower getting through. It was directly below the bathroom though.

We had heating pipes in that location. Do you have a combi with a pressure bar - if so, is that lower than you'd expect? Either way, it's worth lifting upstairs boards, that way you can see if it looks a bit damp along there. If whoever lives in the house isn't able, it's worth getting your heating engineer to take a look, he'll be able to sort of heating or general pipework.

Boiler pressure is fine.

Just before completion there was bath leak which persimmon told us about and fixed so I wonder if it’s from that and I’ve just not noticed it the last few weeks?

I’ve got a snagging company coming out tomorrow to do a report so I’ll ask them about it and report it to persimmon to be on the safe side 😊
