We are looking to relocate up north for a number of reason.
somewhere we have been looking at is Hull. What’s it like to actually live there?
people love to dismiss it, however having visited (all be in many years ago) I actually really liked my time there.

id love to hear people’s input, from those to have/ do actually live there.

TIA

Rough as.
If you do go out as far as Hessle

AreYouShittingMe · 22/05/2024 19:44

It's very mixed. Rough areas, but also nice areas (avenues, dukeries, Victoria dock, garden village). Pick your area wisely and it's great.
Also, what are classed as 'villages' but are essentially the suburbs (Hessle, Anlaby, Cottingham) are ok too.
Depends what you are comparing it too, to be fair.

And, as you might be able to tell from the answers so far, a bit 'marmite' 🤣

Have you lived in Hull? I know it’s a very deprived area, however we visited an old friend who lived in the newland park area and it seemed nice!

@AreYouShittingMe that’s good to know. We’ve been to Victoria dock before.
it’s so hard because until you live somewhere you don’t actually know what it will truly be like!

It depends where you live - like many other places. There are areas of chronic deprivation, there are lovely, beautiful vibrant places. If you'll be needing secondary schools, really think about where you are buying.

It's never Dull in 'ull.

I was brought up in Hull, still have friends and family there and visit regularly. It has significantly improved. I have friends in Hessle, Hedon, Victoria Dock and East Hull (Hessle and Hedon are officially the East Riding of Yorkshire council but very close). They're all fine, my friend in East Hull lives on one of the roads off East Park and the whole area has improved since I was young.

I have lived in different cities around the midlands and the south west and Hull is no worse. Everywhere has it's worse areas.

I have a sibling who lives there with partner. They live in The Avenues area and it’s a nice area, although there are some rougher areas nearby. No rougher than other large cities particularly though. I am always impressed how buzzy places are, so many nice cafes, bars, restaurants etc. The Marina is a great area now as is the old town around the minster.

Schools are a mixed bag - sibling and their partner are both secondary teachers. Are you Catholic? If not, look carefully at where you move for secondaries.

Hi @Sprinklerainbows
My husbands family lived/ live in Hull I have spent a lots of time there
Going back to the days when there was a curfew in town to stop fights! (late 80s)
Town centre is currently very run down.
Marina is ok but you would not want to live near it as housing is horrible.
For 5 miles or so you could live in Hessle, Cottingham, Hedon and not have the grief, Absolutely do not consider Bransholme.

izzywizzywont · 22/05/2024 19:57

Willerby, cottingham or hessle yes. Otherwise no.
