Look at buying a house, detached and no kids so no issue re schools. Don’t want a new build and budget around £750k. What areas are worth looking at and what’s the market like? Not local and will be relocating.
Thanks.

It's all nice

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 16:59

Thanks, just wasn’t sure where to start or if anywhere to avoid.

Agree, it's all pretty nice round there. Do you want town or village? I am from round there (now live away) but I would very happily move back to Morpeth. Lots of great houses, nice town centre, lots of green space.

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:04

Hi easy access to Morpeth. Was looking at Longhirst, St Mary’s Stannington and Bedlington?

OP posts:
Fetacheese · 21/05/2024 17:10

Bedlington wouldn't be my first choice - not as green or as pretty as Morpeth, a bit more built up. Longhirst is fine, v small but near the coast and v close to Morpeth. I don't really know St Mary's Stannington. If you're looking at villages, how about Longhorsley or Mitford?

ohfook · 21/05/2024 17:11

Bedlington is a very mixed area! You'll certainly get a house cheaper there than in Morpeth though.

I drive through Longframlington often with work and always think it looks like a lovely place to live.

keeponrunning85 · 21/05/2024 17:12

I live in Morpeth. Do you need to commute? How rural do you want to be?

keeponrunning85 · 21/05/2024 17:15

Longhirst is pretty but quite small. I think St Mary's is pretty much just new-ish houses and a pub.

Felton is a lovely reasonable sized village about 20 mins north of Morpeth. Longhorsley and Longframlington are also nice. Whalton is beautiful but I don't think houses come up for sale there very often.

I don't know Bedlington at all. I think it is maybe not quite so 'well to do' as Morpeth.

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:20

The house in Bedlington was Hartford Hall estate-don’t know if that is a nice area? Think Longhorsley and Longframlington too far out. Will look at Mitford. What about Fairmoor? Probably not enough in Whalton although lovely. What’s Darras Hall like?
are properties going over asking price?
Thanks.

It is Grin

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:22

No need to commute. Is Netherwitton nice? Other area was Hepscott?
Thanks.

OP posts:
Fetacheese · 21/05/2024 17:27

Hepscott has some lovely houses with huge gardens, and a nice village centre. Not particularly exciting- pretty quiet place and not that characterful but nothing unpleasant about it.

midgetastic · 21/05/2024 17:28

Too far out from what?

Longhorsdely isn't far from Morpeth at all - assuming Morpeth is your "big town" with decent shops and the like

Darras hall is very different to Morpeth and surrounding areas - it's an extension of ponteland which is an extension of Newcastle - so much more built up and busy

If you want a place that's walking distance to most amenities then Morpeth itself is a great town

I always think of bedlington as a mixture of modern Newcastle commuter belt and old pit decline although it's years since i been there - it has no reason to go

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:31

Being able to walk to Morpeth would be good so probably no further than a mile or so. Also train link from Morpeth to Newcastle would be useful. Is the market buoyant or slower than before?

OP posts:
Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:32

Looked at properties online in Darras Hall but they seem to sell very quickly.

ohfook · 21/05/2024 17:35

What I'm about to say is very unhelpful but hopefully a Morpeth mumsnetter could add in the missing info.

I once went to a car boot sale at Tramwell (near Morpeth) and got lost. No idea what the surrounding area is called but it looked absolutely amazing. I'd 100% live there if I had the cash. It looked a bit like Center Parcs Grin.

midgetastic · 21/05/2024 17:35

If you want to walk into Morpeth town centre than you are looking at Morpeth itself

Yes the train service , buses and decent shops are all there

Eg there is a bus from Morpeth to the sage in Gateshead when the classical concerts are on - I don't think it stops at any other village / town

Yes darras hall / ponteland will have decent buss services into Newcastle which is a great city - but that would be a completely different vibe to Morpeth areas

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:40

Will look at Morpeth itself and Tramwell. Are houses selling quickly?

OP posts:
Fetacheese · 21/05/2024 17:41

Agree with Midgetastic. If you want to be within walking distance of Morpeth, then look at Morpeth. It's got a real range of different houses, plus some of the houses on the outskirts are near lovely walks and have quite a country feel - but near excellent transport links.

@ohfook Tranwell Woods I think you mean! I used to go for bike rides down that road and stare at the amazing houses!

Chagall175 · 21/05/2024 17:45

I think I will have to up my budget to sound £850k to get what we want as houses are quite ££.

Hartford Hall is a little way out of Morpeth, probably about 5 miles-ish. It's walkable to Bedlington. I had a friend who lived in the Hartford Hall development and there were funny rules about what residents could do ( they weren't allowed barbecues), so check things like that. She moved to Hartford Bridge, which is nearby, although there is a permanent traveller site there ( a proper , legal one).

What it is it you’re looking for in a house? Morpeth is more expensive than surrounding areas but 750k will still get you a massive house.

keeponrunning85 · 21/05/2024 18:34

750k should get you plenty in Morpeth. I think if you want to be within a mile of the shops you need to be in Morpeth itself. Fairmoor is very close to the A1 so I guess it depends if road noise bothers you or not.

We live in one of Morpeth's many 1970s housing estates. We're right on the edge and easy walking distance into Morpeth but cross the green at the end of our cul de sac and you can be straight into woods and out into the countryside. It is great!

Tranwell woods is ££££ footballers modern mansions. I enjoy running past them but it feels like no-one actually lives there!

Mitford would be good for feeling a bit more rural and walkable into Morpeth but bit further than a mile.

Not sure on the market really. My right move nosing tells me that nicely done houses seem to sell reasonably quickly. There's a fair few that come onto the market that needs modernising if you're up for a project.
