Wooden frames - best paint?

I'd like to paint some wooden frames to a good finish. They will be showcasing my own artwork, and as they'll be going into a gallery, I'd like the paint to be as smell free as possible.

I don't particularly want a shabby chic finish - just quite matt if possible, and able to withstand minor handling without chipping or flaking becoming a problem.

There are several brands out there but have no idea which one to go for when it comes to painting wood.

Any recommendations that have worked well for you?

I use Dulux Trade Diamond eggshell and two coats of Polyvine Decorators Varnish afterwards. Holds up really well and neither smells particularly strong.

A beautiful and natural finish for wood frames I use myself is with milk paint and wax. You can use the paint thinned down for translucency or as normal for a Matt powdery finish. Varnish or beeswax provide protection and shine.

Thanks. I'll look into that. Any recommended brands?

@burgundybells Not sure if you're still active on here but do you have any advice on this?

@EarthSight , can't help you with brands; I live abroad. But any brand will do. A very small amount (a spoonful) would cover several frames.
