Minimum room size for a teenager

hi all, what's the minimum bedroom size you'd like for a teenager - about 16 years old.

I am looking at a property and the bedroom is about 3m x 3m (9 sq metres). I grew up in a cramped house and shared my bedroom too, so having an idea of "the bare minimum" that's comfortable and will fit in a double bed, desk and wardrobe plays on my mind.

i just want my child to be comfortable and to have their own space.

thanks

It's small but not necessarily unworkable. Could you fit in a high bed with desk and storage underneath?

PiggieWig · 19/05/2024 12:48

Mine (18) still has a high sleeper with gaming station underneath that he’s perfectly happy with. Less room to mess up IMO.

Teen loved those pod hotels like Premier Inn Hub, so we designed his bedroom like one of those.

A compact, well-thought out space customised for his needs and interests (his models, his gaming systems, his pets… and he loves it much more than the more “normal” sized room he had before.

Teens tend to be happier with better used space and less of it than more space unorganised

I agree with this.
It depends on the ceiling height as to what is workable (ours would be too low). It needs to be high enough to allow him to sit up in bed in the high sleeper.
Ikea has some great set ups showing how to maximise space in teen bedrooms, if you have one nearby?

I don’t think you need a double bed. Mine didn’t have double beds, and when they went to university, they still had single beds in halls.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 19/05/2024 14:33

I have two teenagers, both with single rooms. We live in a 3 bed flat with one double and two singles. They are perfectly happy.

BobnLen · 19/05/2024 14:35

DS had a single bed, a double is a bit of a waste of space in a smaller room for a teen.

daisypond · 19/05/2024 14:37

My DC were in bunkbeds in one room. They had a desk each, and a wardrobe each.

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 14:40

We pushed DDs bed (double) against wall and then had a desk, drawers and wardrobe. It's big enough

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 19/05/2024 14:42

You could get a small double bed. Doesn't take quite as much room as a double but loves them more space in bed and big enough for a friend to fit in as well on a sleepover

WitchyWay · 19/05/2024 14:46

Me and most of my friends had single beds, I think it's fine. Also never used a desk, I would use the dining room table or my lap on my bed.

3m x 3m seems fine to me :)

Summertimer · 19/05/2024 15:57

Our teen is 6ft, he does not have a double bed or a huge bedroom. It’s never cramped his style at all.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/05/2024 16:14

3m x 3m is plenty large enough for a single room. That's larger than my 12yo DSs room. He has a midsleeper with a desk, bookshelves and cupboard under and a free standing wardrobe.

My teenage DDs share a room that's approximately 4m x 4m. They have a single bed each with a bedside table between. A teenager does not need a double bed, I didn't sleep in a double bed until I was living with DH in my late 20s, all through my student years I had a single bed.

WithASpider · 19/05/2024 16:34

It's fine. DD1's room is a very similar size and she has a double bed, wardrobe, desk and chest of drawers in hers, and still has floor space for an air bed when friends stay over.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate you all sharing. I just have zero idea about it and can't imagine more space than I had as a kid/teenager myself.🙏
