Ants

Hi,

We have had ants living in our kitchen for years and have got fed up with trying to poison them. I wondered if anybody knows whether it would work if we try to block up holes? It's hard to get to the holes because they are behind the kick board of the kitchen units, under the sink.

Our fitted dishwasher has just packed up, and when we pulled it out, we found about two whole bucket loads of soil under the units where the ants have been bring it in and putting it in piles.

I had no idea there was so much work going on back there, because we only see a very few ants each July, and thought they mainly lived outside.

It must be like Fraggle Rock back there in the summer, and I had no idea.

We had this in our conservatory under a suspended floor, years if bait did nothing so we took up the floor. Then we cleared out all the loose debris, put lots if diatomaceous earth down the holes and then blocked them. None have come back yet, although I imagine they will one day. I think they have an absolutely huge colony going out into the garden too as there are sometimes ant hills in the lawn.

Not to sound dramatic OP, but ants can cause serious issues. A large colony, left for several years, can actually cause subsidence. They turn the ground to dust and undermine the foundations.

You need to get this sorted, those two buckets of soil are from u der your walls and floors!

Get a professional pest controller in.

Get a pest controller round. Hot water in a nest if outside usually gets rid of them. Gruesome I know but waking up to find a trail of ants marching through your home is really unpleasant.

Every time we get an infestation, I mix an equal measure of bicarbonate of soda and icing sugar, and sprinkle it near the point of entry. Every single time, without fail, all the ants in the house are gone within a matter of days.

We’ve got them in our garden. All along one side , found out as we dug down to plant trees. Went ahead and put the trees in but they aren’t doing very well. They’ve also infiltrated a plant pot. They don’t seem to move though! We don’t disturb them as we don’t want them in the house.

Thanks! this is really good to know. We'll call the professionals. There's probably room for a car under our foundations at the rate they're going.
