Council Housing Local MP

Hi all just wondering if anyone has had success getting permanent accommodation from temporary accommodation from the council by contacting their Local MP on your housing situation as I’ve just contacted mine. Hopefully some positive stories here?

This is my first post, so newbie here not sure how this all works 😂

I don’t work in housing but I do work for the LA. People get very twitchy when MPs take an interest. So it can be very helpful if they actually have what you want. They aren’t magicians though so if there is nothing, there is nothing. Also you probably need to have something distinctive about your circumstances to get an MP to follow up for you.

I’ve worked for MPs, helping with this sort of issue.

In my experience an MPs’ involvement will help if there’s been a mistake, or your circumstances are unusual so it’s unfair to apply the usual system to you. It won’t bump you up the list just because they ask (and nor should it).

Your MP will probably genuinely want to help, but they aren’t the decision makers and they can’t work miracles.

Thanks so much. That sounds hopeful. Fingers crossed 🤞

Thanks for your insight. My council are not very helpful. If we residents don't make any contact regarding anything or raise any issues with them then they don't bother to help you get a move unless you bring their attention to it, but still then they don't help much. So hoping this helps. Fingers crossed 🤞

Can you explain a bit more about your situation? As a PP has mentioned, if a mistake has been made that's very different to if you've been waiting a while with no special circumstances or errors in your case.

I've worked in a local authority before and MP involvement wouldn't have had an effect really. If a mistake was pointed out it would be acted upon regardless of who raised it.

Hi not to be rude, to be honest I would rather not go over my situation here as its very long-winded. I just wanted to know the effectiveness (if that's a word 🤔) of writing to my Local MP on housing issues with the council.

If you don't mind answering this tho as its part of my situation, what if my housing officer made promises on gaining a permanent property by paying off some minor arrears like he said which I did and also told me a website to look at of said properties and asked me what floor I wanted to be on in said property and I've still not got a property this was over a year ago. He made promises which ultimately are not even his decision to make apart from the rehousing team?

Obviously you don't have to . But I think the person asked because it's easier to give advice if they know your situation.

I think where you were told you could be housed faster in a block on x floor. They will likely explain that's not their policy . They may apologise. But it won't change anything.

Also depending on your situation/banding you could wait years to be housed. But as I said that totally depends on your situation.
