How much space do two people really need?

DP and I are trying to decide where to live in London.

He’d prefer to live somewhere leafy like Greenwich and have a two bedroom cottage with a garden, maybe 100 square metres.

I’m thinking more a hip city pad, one bed, a terrace, 60 square metres.

We saw one gorgeous and well thought out flat but it was only 45 sqm and I think that is too small for two adults!

I think it depends on how you live. If you spend most of your time out and about and have few possessions then I think you could manage with 50 sqm. I was happy in a tiny 1 bed as a 20-something with DH.
Nowadays when I like to spend more time at home I think I would need more space. And DH snores so I want to have somewhere else to sleep when it gets bad!

We’ve decided 65sqm is our minimum to live in a property to allow for furniture and room to move without leading to arguments.

Does anyone work from home? What do you use your space for?

When my daughter was buying a 1 bed flat in London she decided that 60sqm was her minimum and wouldn't look at anything smaller. She does work from home 4 days a week though so needed to have space for a desk and desk chair in the living room (plus a big sofa etc).

It all falls down to finances really. Personally I'm on husband's side and get a garden and a nice cottage.

I would always go for something that is a bigger space in the same price range. It allows you to spread out a bit, develop hobbies and have a space to put them and maybe give you a second bedroom for mates to stay the night or if one of you is smashed and snoring like a JCB.

Never underestimate your own private garden space (assuming it's a back garden) as it can be bliss sitting there in the summer without a care in the world.
