F&B colours in E/W open plan

We've almost settled on using Dulux Timeless in our open plan living area, but I am still not sold on how yellow it looks in the East part.

Our decorators suggested colour matching to F&B. they said Mizzle would go great in our cream and wood modern kitchen, so I was wondering if any of you have used any warm grey/taupes that would go with it?

It's not a period property, the house is 50 years old, but surrounded by a lot of nature with some stunning green views, so would like it to fit in with the feeling.

I am not sure if we'll paint dining and living area the same colour or just something harmonious, it is a very large area so might be nice to section it with colour.
We're picking tester pots tomorrow and wonder what we should try out.

Is Skimming Stone a similar to Egyptian Cotton? I am looking for something lighter.
Is Ammonite very grey?

Our ceiling and woodwork will be just white, so need something that won't look dirty next to it. Thank you :)

If you're going for f n b, buy f n b, don't get a look alike.

Why not colour match, out of interest? We’ve had good results.

FondOfOwls · 17/05/2024 11:10

My decorators prefer to either use Dulux or colour match F&B, as we need the extra durable finish due to having small children. I trust their opinion, so will do what they suggest :)

I just think it doesn't have the same complexity of colour. Plus I know it's expensive, but most people don't repaint loads, so if you love a colour id rather have the right one. In the grand scheme of house owning i don't think it's a massive expense, but it's one you live with and can see every day. @Cheeesus

FondOfOwls · 17/05/2024 14:07

I'm happy to risk it with a dupe for now, maybe when the kids are older we can go F&B.
I have two 'creative' DC, one already took crayon to the wall once.

DH is finally caving in, he's had enough tester pots so maybe we can go more exciting than Timeless even if we stick with Dulux :)

I would say colour matching is fine with the lighter and more neutral tones but definitely worth it for the bolder and darker colours.

We've gone for Cornforth white. It's a lovely calming neutral - warm beigey grey that looks like a colour against white but isn't a cold grey at all. We've used it in north east and south west facing and it is not yellowey anywhere.

Reallybadidea · 17/05/2024 15:24

We have Johnstone's Trade colour-matched Mizzle in a north-west facing room and it's beautiful.

We have proper F&B elsewhere in the house and maybe I'm just a tasteless pleb, but I don't think it's all that.

You aren't. F&B paint is terrible unless you use all their primers and faff. Many professional decorators will not use it. I like its chalky finish but application and wearability are dreadful.

The best paint on the market by far is the Valspar V&Co dead flat matt. Its a great matt finish and scrubbably bullet proof. Oh and two-thirds the price of F&B.

There's a dreadfully misled snobbery about paint.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2024 15:38

Alternative colours suggester - shows how close colours from different ranges are.

F&B modern emulsion is apparently the most hard wearing emulsion on the market but decorators don't like F&B because it needs more coats. Personally I prefer Little Greene, the paint is a dream to use and has very little smell, painted DS's room in LG last year and it still looks fab whereas you can see marks on the F&B estate emulsion in our sitting room (not a heavy use room, DC prefers the playroom). The LG colour card has actual paint on it as well so less need for tester pots (although they are very cute). In fact F&B is the only 'luxury' brand that doesn't use their actual paint on their colour cards, I wonder if they actually make most money on the tester pots because so many people colour match F&B and the colour card is not accurate.

Have a look at Dimity. It's a warm pinkish taupe and is lovely. We've used it a lot.

WitchyWay · 17/05/2024 16:26

We've got shaded white in most of our house. It's a lovely greige with a very slight green undertone which elevates the colour in my opinion. I love it so much that I plan to use it again in my new home. We had it mixed at Johnstones. The only issue we've had is it isn't great with kid finger prints, so I may change the formula.

Goldenmario · 17/05/2024 16:42

SJust to confuse you I’ll throw in strong White. I hate grey, beige and plain white but love this. It’s all of those and none of those at the same time. We have it in a room that has east and west facing windows and I haven’t spotted any adverse undertones in any light.

FondOfOwls · 17/05/2024 16:47

I like the idea of Strong White, but I find it a bit confusing. What colour is it then?

@Okayornot Is Dimity similar to Dulux Nutmeg White? I like it, but DH doesn't.

Off to pick the testers in a moment, I will be getting:
Skimming stone
Strong White
Dimity
School house white
Plus maybe one or two more

Although DH is so sick of me talking about it he even agreed to Dulux Nutmeg White, which I love! I will update later how it goes.

We have Pointing in our kitchen and like it. It's got a slight yellow tone to it but I'd still say it was a creamy neutral tone.

Mirabai · 18/05/2024 12:21

Colour matching never works. A decorator used a colour match in my dining room (communication failure) and I walked in and said that’s not Green Ground it looks like Pea Soup. Equally on another occasion Slipper Satin came out beige.

Mirabai · 18/05/2024 12:24

Current neutrals I have: Dimity, Wimborne White, Slipper Satin, Pointing, Skimming Stone. They’re all good but I will change Skimming Stone for Ammonite at the next repaint as it’s paler.

Pointing is a rich cream, you might find it too yellowy if that’s your current concern.

Not sure as I've never used nutmeg white. From images on the web it looks a stronger colour than dimity and perhaps a bit pinker, but I guess depends on the light in the room.

In my house dimity is a pale chalky taupe, with no grey or yellow tones. It's sufficiently light that I've used it in place of white against stronger colours (eg some dark blues) when I've wanted something warmer than a true white.

Mirabai · 18/05/2024 15:12

Only go by the tester the colour cards look nothing like the actual colour.

Colombie · 18/05/2024 15:12

Thanks for that link @JaninaDuszejko . Interesting to see F&B skimming stone and Dulux Egyptian cotton come out as a 3 star match.

Strong white looks mid grey in our house. A visitor once described a test patch as battleship grey, which put me off it a bit. But it might look completely different in another house, and tester patches against a white background are terrible for making a colour look darker than it would as a whole wall.

Dimity and nutmeg white are pretty similar. To me dimity is more overtly pink, and nutmeg white is more forgiving if you have cool colours in the furnishings etc.

FondOfOwls · 18/05/2024 15:48

Hi all, I picked up some F&B tester pots but nothing was as nice as Nutmeg White, so DH gave in ;)
Going with Dulux for now. Thank you for helping me narrow the amount of testers I bought. At £5 a pop I'd have gone bankrupt!

Speaking from my nutmeg white living room, good choice OP!
