Black Fences

I had no idea which topic would be most appropriate for this riveting post.

I'm going to paint my garden fence. I'm thinking black. If you have a black fence, please could you post a picture.

Also interested in dark grey.

It's currently blue and I've never loved it. I only bought it because the colour was on sale.

Thanks.

My sister's fence is black, it really makes the plants stand out against it. There are lots of images on google that show black fences along with some plants. If you are unsure you could buy a roll of black weed membrane and attach it to yoru blue fence panel and see what you think. Better to be sure because once you paint it black you would have to paint it much lighter again before applying any other colour.

Just do it. It can always be painted again but black or dark grey is a great backdrop for plants (and I presume you will have lots of plants in front of it). Shou sugi ban (charred wood) is very trendy at the moment, and black paint would achieve the gist of that without the price tag.

I have Cuprinol urban slate which is a dark grey and I love it, I think it looks great when the colourful flowers start to appear. Makes me realise my coral coloured tulips never flowered this year :-( Bloody squirrels.

I don't have a lot of plants. I'm actually having my garden done at the moment. There's a small play area with a play house and then just grass.

I do have a patio area with two raised flower beds with some red/dark pink peonies in which would look fabulous next to black. But that's it. I'm not a gardener.

I've wanted black for years. I'm just going to do it.

Mine's "Urban slate" aka dark grey. It does make a great backdrop for plants.

I had a bot of decking that was black, with a dark blue bench on. I loved it, the plants really stood out. I'd like to do it again in my current home, just working on my husband.

If you ever want to change a fence colour, lighter, a jet washer will blast old stain off. It will splash over nearby plants, cars and drying washing.

Modern fence stains leave a coloured, waxy film on the wood to repel moisture. It does not really soak in

The jet will also blast off dirt, moss and eroded or rotted wood, usually just a thin layer, but if your fence is in bad condition, that might tip it over the edge.

Love a black fence. Have done ours and my mum's (all 39 panels 😇). Cuprinol ducksback black.

Love a black fence. Ours is Ronseal Black Tudor Oak - it pops against a light coloured patio and all the plants.
