Colchester, Norwich or Canterbury?

Sorry, another one of these! Looking to do the classic move out of London for better schools and more space.

Our requirements are:

  • 4/5 bed semi (or detached) around £700k
  • OK trains to London (will be doing once a week)
  • Good secondary and primary schools (not fee paying)
  • We like pretty town/city centres with some history/nice buildings
  • Plenty to do for teenagers and safe enough for them to get around by themselves
  • Near forest and coast (but this is fairly low down the list and realistically we'll only go a few days a year!)
  • Lots of leisure activities - cinema, bowling, swimming etc for families
  • Green space/parks - and a decent playground or two

Colchester, Norwich and Canterbury are all contenders based on research and day trips - which do you think sounds closest to our wish list? We are moving from a lively area of London so would want to live relatively centrally rather than in a village - city life is more our thing (even if it's a much smaller city). I grew up in Cambridge and I think am probably trying to recreate my own childhood/teen experience here, but sadly Cambridge is too expensive for the sort of home that we'd like!

Basically every time we get excited about somewhere as an option we then find lots of posts online about how bad the traffic is, or how dire the high street is, or how somewhere is overrun by students or carnage on a Saturday night. It's helpful to know the down sides of different places but also makes it hard to get excited about moving to them!

Obviously nowhere is perfect but we are looking for a forever home where we can put down roots and so we want to make the right choice. Once we edge closer to a decision we will probably airbnb there for a 'holiday' to get more of a sense.

Would particularly love to hear from people who have experience living in these places, or know people who do?

Thank you!

Theres not a lot in colchester any more tbh i left it years ago its just coffee shops and army men.
My sister still lives there and shes trying so hard to get out and move to suffolk.
Its became very dull and very expensive but you may like it.
Norwich i only go for a day out not to bad.
I moved to suffolk so much nicer well for me it is.
Canterbury my sisters son moved up there and loves it.

I live just outside Colchester, moved here 15 years ago and I love it - it's got lots of independent shops, loads of history and is close enough to London and also near the countryside and the coast. I don't have children so not much help on that front! Also loved Norwich but Colchester would win out for me over Norwich - it's my intended forever home.

Colchester, decent value. Not the nicest.
Norwich, full of character, but a bit isolated.
Canterbury looks pretty but not sure re travel to other places - looks a tad out of the way for me.

Hi, just wanted to follow this up and ask whether you moved in the end? We have a young family and considered all of these places. Any advice would be really appreciated.

I'd also be interested to know if/where you moved. I know all 3 places and would have said at the time that I think Canterbury ticks most boxes. My personal favourite is Norwich, but longest trip to London, and although Norwich is a great city transport links aren't the best which may be an issue as kids grow up etc. Colchester definitely bottom of the list

Canterbury has academically selective grammar schools. Great if your kids get in - not so much if they do not.
Well situated for travel to beach, London ( 56 mins to St Pancras) and Europe.
Lively city centre which is likely to remain so given the level of tourism, the Universities and the wealth of the Cof E. Theatre and Music scene.
Quite a lot of poverty in the surrounding areas.

Canterbury looks nice for outsiders but it’s an absolutely dump. Council doesn’t put any money into it. Some of the smaller villages are lovely though, Chartham,Wye, Shepherdswell, Barham, Wingham, ash to name a few.

What about Whitstable? You should be able to get a house in budget. Close to Canterbury. Near to the Blean for woodland walks. On the coast (stating the bleeding obvious there!).

Only downside is the selective secondary system. Fine for children who pass the Kent test. Not so good for those who don't. That said, several local grammars are under subscribed, and do accept children on appeal, which does give a second crack at the whip.

Colchester! Moved here four years ago from London and absolutely love it. Fastest trains to Liverpool Street are only 45 minutes, it has amazing grammar schools if those are right for your DC, and there's a lovely park, two cinemas, two theatres, some great restaurants and easy access to the coast. Plus you'd get a fantastic house for 700K.

Not the point of the thread I know but always baffles me when people want to move out of London for good schools. London has some of the best schools in the country. Obviously this will vary from area to area but London schools consistently perform above the national average.

Depends how much you like Reform voting flag shaggers op.

I would say Norwich but it's a bit far from London for weekly trips.

So, Canterbury.

Just realised @EmilyMK1 hasn't posted since May.

Any update?
