Sewer constantly blocking. F my effing life today

Jamfirstest · 10/05/2024 16:18

Had the sewer pipe blasted on Sunday and about 3rd time this year. Arrived home today to standing water in the drains I'm so gutted.

We have 3 loos. Downstairs is connected to a branch sewer and is fine. 2 x upstairs loos feed into a sewer that's underneath drain by back door. Sewer then collects from middle drain which is the showers and then a 3rd which is the gutter. The sewer blocks between the 1st and second drain.

The drain unblocker chaps put a camera down and said there is a concrete lip which stuff gets stuck on, nothing much else going on.

I can reach all the other drains with the jet washer but not this blocked stretch,

It's £115 every time the blasters come out.

Any ideas??

Does the sewer just serve your house or does it also serve another property?
Have you tried rodding it?

It's just our house I can't blame it on any neighbours. This is well before it joins the sewer network.

We had rods and dp binned them saying they are no good. Sigh

New house rule - number 2s in the downstairs toilet only?!

Timeforabiscuit · 10/05/2024 16:28

You might need more water to be used during the flush, especially if you have small modern cisterns - so might need to double flush.

Another is the type of toilet paper and amount used, we can't use "naice" toilet paper as it's too thick and won't break down.

Alternatively, I know people with no mains sewerage who keep a bucket of wipes which are soaked in Milton and washed, so only poo, wee and water.

I'm thinking you already don't use pads or wipes down the toilet, or noone else in the house is putting anything else down.

This also blocks it's just much easier to sort.
It's Victorian terrace with a not v sloping sewer.

Urgh

Going to the range to see what grim chemicals I can buy

You may need the drain re-laid to remove the lip. Or maybe they can put some kind of clever liner/sleeve in?

Probably pricey & a faff if garden or patio needs to be dug up, but probably worth it for the hassle and the repeated £115 bills.

Or. Wees only upstairs!

CosmosQueen · 10/05/2024 16:30

Could you get the troublesome bit relined?
I do sympathise, we had endless problems at our old house because the sewer pipe had barely any fall on it so it regularly blocked.

Thanks - no nothing like sanpro we are noon cup and period pants.
It's loo roll - we get aldi naice loo roll but I'm thinking that can't continue.

Any super flimsy loo roll recommendations?

Also I have told dp one of the loos doesn't flush properly and he filled up the cistern more but no joy.

Sell the house

AGlinnerOfHope · 10/05/2024 16:34

A small squirt of washing up liquid with each flush? It breaks things down a bit.

Are people using too much paper? I’ve heard people using loads and loads, judging by the rustling and rumbling of the loo roll holder.

protectthesmallones · 10/05/2024 16:36

Slightly different but we have a toilet that doesn't seem to use as much water to flush and this, along with branded toilet paper, was forever blocking.

We now regularly use half a bottle of fairy washing up liquid and a full flush with a bucket of very hot water alongside. This keeps the pipes clean.

We also use the cheapest thinnest toilet paper as it breaks down fast.

Our plumber recommended hot water and strong vinegar down the pipes too but we've not needed to use this.

We've not had a single blockage since.

Once your blockage has been moved along maybe try this too?

Timeforabiscuit · 10/05/2024 16:37

Yup! The ocado standard paper, but I think the water council have a flush safe standard. On the plus side non plush paper is much cheaper!

The naice paper with moisturiser and embossed just doesn't break down.

We also have Victorian plumbing and a brick which catches, so well accustomed!

protectthesmallones · 10/05/2024 16:37

The cheapest six roll pack in Aldi don't block ours. Dissolve on contact though.

EveryKneeShallBow · 10/05/2024 16:47

Macerator toilet?

Jamfirstest · 10/05/2024 16:50

Any ideas what I can buy to clear it tonight?

OP posts:
Liliberated · 10/05/2024 16:51

We have the same. We bought a jet power hose and jet it out ourselves, I say we I mean DH. Yours is probably too flat. We try not to do poos in the affected loo. Less solid materials. It is not pleasant.

Bottle of industrial drain cleaner directly into offending manhole cover every week or two, must only use 2-ply loo roll (usually this is the Basics range, or v cheap stuff on Amazon), a lot more flushes per toilet visit than you would usually use.

Industrial drain cleaner can also be used in the toilet (check your bottle first) to clear existing loo blockage.

shiftingsandsoftime · 10/05/2024 17:05

Re. thin loo paper, even if you need to use more, this won't block the drains to the same extent as using less of the thicker loo paper, because even if you use more it breaks down so much more easily.

That's really helpful thank you x

This is good advice. Thank you I will be changing the loo roll since obviously I'm a woman and I do all the shopping. Sigh.

We
Had to get a bit cut out of our outlet pipe and extension thing screwed in. Excuse the non technical explanation as it was just too narrow and kept backing up from the upstairs toilets.
