Portable Air Con Units

Thinking about buying a portable air con unit. Our bedroom gets so very hot in the summer.

Is it better to get a super powerful unit and leave on low? Or a smaller one on max for one room.

Having just read it costs £2k and a full day of disruption to install air con I’m interested too. The only unit I have seen (in a friend’s house years ago) was absolutely huge, size of a fridge and I don’t have bedroom space for that.

We've just spent a few hundred on a portable air con. Also acts as a heater and a dehumidifier so hopefully gets some use outside of the summer too. We've got a three storey town house and the top room gets so hot it's unbelievable.

I had a very discreet (simple/ dark grey on a dark grey wall) aircon unit fitted in my bedroom in 2021 - The BEST £2000 this menopausal sweaty mess has ever spent.

Before that we had portable units - not a patch on the fitted one. They were heavy, cumbersome & ugly.

Sadly we've just sold the house & moved. I can honestly say it's the only thing I miss

Forgot to say no difference with electric bill between portable & fitted.

Does anyone have one of the portable ones - the ones which are about the size of a washing machine? There seem to be a number of models on sales starting around £300. Do they actually work?

I would like something for the bedroom but am always a bit dubious about something which is so much cheaper than a proper installed system which seem to be around £2,000. We would probably only use it for 2 months of the year so am a bit loathed to spend £2,000 on that type.

I have a portable one that I bought in 2020, when I was 8 months pregnant in sweltering August. I absolutely love it. Although it only gets used for the hottest 6-8 weeks of the year, it has been money well spent for me. We position it between our room and the nursery so that it stays cool in both rooms overnight. If ours broke, I'd replace it in a heartbeat.

Yes we have a portable one, paid about £250 for it and worth every penny.

Yes, I've a couple of portable ones. They are really noisy so I can't leave them going overnight, maybe newer ones are quieter? They really do work.
In a previous house we had fitted aircon in the bedroom and it was heavenly.

We bought this one in 2022 from screwfix. Absolutely amazing!! The hose is way too short so we bought a really long one so fits out top of window.

Is it expensive to run?

Skiin · 11/05/2024 07:17

It wasn't too bad, I can't remember how much extra. But was so grateful i had it as we had the heatwave summer 2022 and I had a newborn so kept us all cool.

My DH bought me a “portable” one about 4 years ago. It’s the size of a fridge so is a bit of an eyesore. It’s also quite noisy but OMG it’s a godsend when it’s hot at night!

GoingOnHol · 11/05/2024 07:42

We have a portable one, only use it I extreme heat because it's noisy and I can see a spike in electric use so i imagine it's quite pricey. Mainly used in DD's.room before she goes to bed.
I want a ceiling fan! They make. A.room surprisingly cool. Our light fitting isn't in the middle of the room though so we'd have to move it which bumps the cost up significantly
