Ground source heat pump to cool house

Hi,

I have been wondering whether it would be worth getting a ground source heat pump to help cool our house in summer. We live in the south east and our house can be terribly hot for months every year.

I wondered if anybody might have a ground source heat pump and know whether it is effective at cooling?

We don't want an air source one as we wouldn't want the noise of a fan in our garden.

We tried buying an air con unit but it gives off a funny plastic smell and gives me a terrible sinus headache. The service engineer says he can smell the plastic smell too, but has not idea what to do about it. We ran the fan on the air con unit in the shed for months and it made no difference. It is not leaking.

Thanks!

Giving your thread a bump for you.

Our portable air con unit never made a smell. I'd return it.

When you talk about ground source for cooling, do you mean via underfloor heating pipes? If so, it's possible but not recommended due to the risk of condensation forming. We considered this but were advised against.
We're having ground source plus an active cooling system put in in a renovation. Not sure if they are linked at all.

@Bluebell247 does an active cooling system mean traditional air con then? I'd be interested to know what you're doing.

You would need a ground to air system for cooling. Ground to water (ie the heat pump runs radiators) isn't very effective at cooling but is better for when it's running the central heating. You can get a system which outputs air (cool in summer warm in winter) . We had one in a holiday home and it was fine but it's usually easier to make the heating feel comfortable on a radiator based system.

Ground source is pretty expensive and you'll need to excavate a biggish area for the ground array. I'd love one

@AlwaysLookingForward fan coil units. Different from air con I believe.

Fan coil is separate from the ground source ufh setup.
It uses the air in the room and is plumbed in as it uses water to cool. We also have mvhr which purifiers the air. I think air con draws in air from outside.

Expensive to install, and unless in an energy efficient new build you will be literally throwing money away. We have air to air, the ones these days have low outdoor fan settings and are much smaller than a ground source heat pump
