Anyone care to help me plan this wardrobe space?

Loft extension. This corner will be the wardrobe area. The access will be from where the no 2 is. We’ve used the second photo as inspiration; hopefully it gives you an idea of what we’re aiming for.
We are restricted because of the sloping roof which hopefully you can make out.
Builder is asking us for what we’d like so he can start making it.
How much Hanging? Drawers? Shelves?
DH is asking me to decide.
I don’t know 😊

Any thoughts or guidance gratefully received.

What kind of clothes do you own? Some people need lots of hanging space and some people have more foldable clothes plus womenswear can often require a longer hanging space than menswear (hence the old fashioned ladies & gentleman’s wardrobes being two distinct types of furniture)

Do you need shoe storage too?

If the space is big enough for walk in I would have the hanging space on the middle side and use the shorter height space for drawers and shelves.

Carrie Bradshaw’s walk-through wardrobe to the bathroom would be my personal ideal but here’s a similar version that uses the end space for shoes and bags.

I personally like a closed walk in closet with good artificial lighting, so ideally you would put a door at the end. This keeps out the damp from neighboring bathrooms.

My theory is the simpler the more versatile and least expensive.

I hang virtually all my clothes on hangers so I would put in alot of hanging spaces. You don't really need expensive drawers in a closet that has a door. Shelves above hangers and then maybe a column of shelves on each side closest to the lighting. HtH

Thank you so much. There will definitely be a door.
I thought drawers rather than shelves for neatness but foolishly hadn't considered the cost implication so thanks very much for highlighting that.

i love the idea of shoes at the end.

We find drawers by far the most useful. Shelves ok, hanging helpful.

As pp said, you really need to look at your clothes. Especially lengths of dresses or skirts and allows for different options.

Go and measure the width of the hanging in your current set up..you and DH. Make sure you have a number for short hanging (shirts etc) and long (dresses etc)

Then build that much and make the rest shelves. Drawers will be much more expensive and you can always use a basket on the shelf to contain socks and knickers etc

Thank you all
