Hi, we're looking at moving to Hatfield from North London as it's much cheaper, but are wondering if this is a nice area to look at?

They've just built a load of flats in the town centre and demolished the shops in Salisbury Square. Galleria is looking g very run down and empty these days too.

We found an amazing house in Hatfield, after the viewing we went for lunch and spent an hour in the town centre... completely ruled it out (despite the house being perfect)

@renomeno I am looking at a nice house near to the station in Hatfield. That said, I am not sure of the area though. Can you share more details around elements which put you off from buying in Hatfield?

Hatfield town centre is grim - if you're thinking of moving near there, please visit and spend some time there first. Welwyn Garden City is much better.

NC so not outing but I live in hatfield

it has a historical poor reputation amongst locals -
ie people from other parts of Hertfordshire- but they can be a bit yokel.

I live in ellenbrook and my children also go to green lanes in garden village

we love it. We very rarely go to the town centre. Although as someone else said it’s now half flats rather than run down shops. There is no reason to go there and I don’t know anyone who does

Hatfield is quite transient and does attract lots of people moving from north London or St Albans. So it’s not a place where it’s easy to make loads of friends.

we moved here for the schools, which are excellent. Property has rocketed in price in the last 10 years but it is cheaper than st albans

welwyn garden city is the same as Hatfield but bigger. Ignore people who go on about that- boring small town suburban rivalry!

areas I would consider are Ellen brook, the ryde, garden village and birchwood. The area around the station is generally nice. It’s only 20 mins into King’s Cross.

Truly horrible

I used to work in Hatfield. Hertford or Ware are much, much nicer.

I don’t mean to be unkind but 99 times out of 100 when people come on here and ask for opinions on a cheaper area they’ve found, it’s a sh*thole.

Things are always cheaper for a reason.

Not necessarily. Sometimes they don’t know the area at all. My 4 bed house in Hatfield cost £850k. Cheaper than a 4 bed in St Albans, almost certainly. “Cheap”?! Not by any usual measure, no.

Never lived there, but used to go there for work with an overnight stay. Only place I went to my hotel room and read or watched TV after dinner. A total hole.

Used to go to school in Hatfield and even then it was on the decline. I would give it a miss. The person who said being around the town centre after dark is to be avoided is right.

Hertford is a better bet. Better schools too.
