Please make my entrance hallway look better

Pic attached. Please help me make this room look nicer.

These 2 wall panels are directly opposite my main door. The entrance hallway is around 5.5m long. There is a door leading off right to the kitchen in between these 2 wall panels (it isn't visible at this angle). Another door leading left into the living room which is partly visible and staircase leading up to the right.

I thought of putting a vertical mirror on one of these walls (but which one)? I can't put a small console or potted plants in front of the wall to your right (near the lights) because it will block access to the understairs storage cupboard. So might have to be a painting or mirror. I don't currently have a console table in the hallway - that's another MN thread altogether - a very large radiator blocks most of the left hand wall. All positions noted as you face the room.

Excuse my really bad drawing... I would paint both walls and accent colour then the further wall put a large mirror then wall closet to stair put chunky shelving with plants, photos/pictures etc

I think you need some colour, maybe wallpaper those 2 panels, or just paper the left panel and paint the right side a colour from the paper and put a mirror up with an interesting frame.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 06/05/2024 21:42

Paint the left hand in a darker colour to drop it back and make the space look bigger. Put a large mirror on the right hand. Big plant in a pot in the corner.

These look like excellent spots for artwork.

I think @ineedafairygodmother's suggestion is perfect- only addition would be to the paint the ceiling a warm but bold colour - will make a huge difference and bring it all together

A massive mirror, almost wall to ceiling. And something colourful on the other wall.

therejustbarely · 06/05/2024 21:50

Mirror, floating shelves with plants, knicknacks, and key hooks just high enough to not be in the way of the cupboard door.

I didn't even see this! Your drawings show the idea much better.

Thank you- much appreciated.
@ineedafairygodmother do you suggest painting both walls in the same colour or different? Or patterned wallpaper? I like the look of a large framed mirror on the back wall which is shaped like a arched doorway or window. I can't do much on the wall in the front because of the clearance needed for the understairs cupboard to open.

I hadn't thought of repainting the ceiling but why not. Don't want to then have to paint the rest of the walls though to avoid making it look discordant.

I have this on a wall in my hall and it looks great with faux cacti (they might get knocked over which is why I don't have real!) in little tin pots.

It's heavy, solid marble and it's really nice! I would never have thought of H&M for homewares but some of their stuff is really nice! I've since been in their homeware store in (I think?) Regent Street in London.

Definitely a huge mirror on the other wall! I'm a real mirrors person; I have them everywhere I can!

I can't wallpaper so never suggest wallpapering haha personally I would paint in a bold dark green and use wood similar to your flooring for the chunky shelves. I've just done my living room in edenberry from B&Q and have lots of wooden features and it makes in very warm, cosy and inviting...... but that's just my taste. Saphire sulut by dulux is a lovely dark blue but blue is often a 'cool' colour.

Playingintheshadow · 06/05/2024 22:05

Oh and get a cover for your radiator - that way you can put some bits and pieces on it, and another mirror above it. I have a mirror over my hall console table, a huge one up the side of the stairs and a small decorative one on the landing, and it looks great!

Roofies · 06/05/2024 22:16

I am actually going to rip out the hallway floor and replace with victorian tiles (I think they are called). I know that isn't to everyone's taste. The radiator used to have a cover but I honestly didn't like the look and removed it. Will change radiator to a vertical one at some point to get some space back.
