Scared about moving to Sheffield

I'm moving from London to Sheffield in a couple of months. I've wanted to do it for years but now that it's happening I'm wondering if I've gone nuts! I'm going to Frecheville, please reassure me (if possible).

What are you particularly nervous about?

Neveralonewithaclone · 06/05/2024 08:43

I suppose just starting completely from scratch. Not knowing a good handyman, good dog walks, feeling like a fish out of water. Having to find new everythings and everyones.

You will be fine. People are friendly in Sheffield. People even chat to strangers in shops and at bus stops. Get to know your immediate neighbours. Loads of places to walk dogs round frechville too.

Blanketenvy · 06/05/2024 09:05

Sheffield is great! Don't know frecheville but generally it's a great city, loads going on, friendly people, amazing countryside but of course normal to be nervous. I'm moving just to another area 10 mins away soon and feel nervous about that!

All of that is totally normal and totally unavoidable but it's also exciting and a new adventure!! Sheffield is a beutiful, friendly and accessible/small city so I think you'll settle in no time. I've moved around quite a lot and always had no issues in settling. Good luck!

Sheffield is awesome, we moved from London 10 years ago & love it. Big enough for lots of stuff to be going on, small enough to get around easily & cheaply and next door to the glories of the Peak District.

UKreturnee · 06/05/2024 10:23

We moved to Sheffield from a major European city 6 months ago and so far have no regrets. We love how green it is (I've never lived somewhere with so many trees and parks), the views you get all the time, and how friendly everyone is. Every time I go out, I feel so happy and at home already. My advice would be to make a list of things you are excited to do when you first move here (places to visit, restaurants to try, etc), and will give something more exciting to plan to counteract all the scary and stressful things about moving. I read this article from the local paper yesterday and it summed up reasonably well how I feel https://www.thestar.co.uk/whats-on/things-to-do/moved-sheffield-three-years-ago-here-nine-things-discovered-about-steel-city-4609147

The tribune is much better if you want a local paper. It has very nicely written articles and you get sent one a week for free if you sign up to their email list.

Neveralonewithaclone · 07/05/2024 07:51

Thank you everyone, i feel a bit better now. I didn't know about the Tribune, just been reading the Star online.

The star is a bit like the daily mail of Sheffield...

donkeyleg · 07/05/2024 08:04

Frechville is a lovely area. I lived there for over 10 years. There is a park and pond for walking the dog. A row of shops with a Tesco, heron, hairdressers, newsagents and takeaways. Also a petrol station and 2 local pubs where you can get food.
Across from the petrol station is a field and woods you could also walk the dog.

Everyone is really friendly and there is a main bus route that takes you straight into town centre or crystal peaks a small shopping centre that also has a retail park

I did wonder! There seems to be a lot of reporting about wheelie bins on fire 😂

Sheffield is great! Just make sure you get out and explore. If you’re outdoorsy you’ll love it. You’re got Rother valley, graves park, meersbrook park, heeley city farm all close by!

Thank you! I've been looking at Silkstone Ravine and thinking it's an easy to reach dog walk when I don't want to drive. My adult son is very shy and vulnerable and I suppose I'm most concerned about antisocial behaviour and teenagers etc. I know they can be everywhere, just he knows his dog walking routes now.

We are outdoorsy! We're doggy, gardeny type people who are low key and down to earth. I grew up further north but have been in London for decades now.

Geneticsbunny · 07/05/2024 08:48

Crystal peak is like a shopping centre from the 1990s. It is lovely but really odd.

Neveralonewithaclone · 07/05/2024 08:51

I'm not much of a shopper but hoping to find farm shops (am vegetarian), gardening club and maybe a knitting club. I'm very exciting 😂 and antique shops.

OP posts:
Geneticsbunny · 07/05/2024 08:56

There is an antiques quarter in the city. Lots of random bits. Brilliant if you like a bargain which needs a little bit of tlc. Not so great if you want immaculate pieces.

Lembas is a vegetarian/ vegan/ fair trade etc cash and carry which is that side of the city. You have to pay to be a member but you can stock up on less perishable stuff.
Lots of local fruit and veg places do delivery boxes. Beanies is one but there might be one nearer frechville.

Bluetoe · 07/05/2024 08:58

You'll be alright one you get to understand the accent. I remember standing in a bus queue on my first day and not understanding a word of what was going on around me 🤣

That's also a big change compared to London. People chat in bus queues!

Geneticsbunny · 07/05/2024 08:58

There is a wi in the city centre which is supposed to be very modern, i.e. lots of young members (under 40). There might be knitting subgroups?

Neveralonewithaclone · 07/05/2024 09:00

Brilliant thanksl! No i wouldn't be looking for immaculate pieces just random weird forgotten pieces needing some tlc. I'll Google Lembas now, thank you.

I totally understand. We are moving from London to Wales. We've been here for the last week settling in and I feel like a fish out of water and really wondering if we've done the right thing.

I'll have to listen hard to begin with. Luckily I grew up in north Yorkshire but my accent is long gone so I'll catch on fairly quickly i hope.

That sounds even more daunting! It's the really small and stupid things that I'm thinking about. Knowing every rat run to avoid traffic, knowing which chemist is excellent and which is rubbish, having the same hairdresser for 15 years. Knowing 10 dog walks off the top of my head.

You'll need to do a lot of chatting in bus queues. It has an awful bus service, with terrible old buses. And lots of hills. Your calves will be like rods of iron after a few months. But, it's a lovely place; friendly, green and with lots to do.
