House storage

Think we are going to break the chain and put our house contents in storage and move in with my parents.

Then my buyer can move in.

Anyone have any tips for storage places?

Is it better to have ground floor than first floor. We have 2 beds large corner sofa, coffee table, no wardrobes but the other endless boxes (29 packed so far).

Never used storage before.

Just be near a lift having done this twice it makes a HUGE difference it makes little difference what floor you are on. The places are like warrens and some don't have lights in units. So magnetic battery PIR are helpful

You can also get the necessary insurance through other companies which is a lot cheaper.

Can you do it through a removal company if this is a temporary arrangement while you find something to buy? They take away, store and deliver to new house. No idea on cost or how long they would store for you, but simplifies everything.

Make sure you label boxes very well as a few weeks down the line you totally forget what's in them. Also take photos of the unit as you load it so you can find things more easily when looking for that one vital box sort of thing. As you can see from my photos here it's easy to end up not finding things if you don't have photos and clear labels

Think about whether you'll need access to the stuff (eg summer clothing, sports equipment) or not. What about if it all takes longer than you expect?

As pp has said, easiest is if done by your removal company, but then you won't have access to it until it is delivered back to you. OR you could split the load and take some yourself to a place where you can get access.

I'm currently using Big Yellow - highly recommended, - after using Safestore about a decade ago. With Big Yellow, they have great easy access, different size units, lots of the removal trolleys, feels light, bright, safe and female friendly (cctv everywhere, units are alarmed, woman manager in my branch) - makes a big big issue for me, when picking things up of a winter evening. I've moved all the stuff in there alone, and it has been fine. Big Yellow also have reductions for the first few months (and also do other reductions if you hold shares in them, which are only £3/each, so could be worth considering). [Not on commission]

If accessing things buy consistent sized double sided boxes and tape on ebay (much cheaper), and label them with the room they came from and contents. Store them in different areas of the room so easy to find again.

Good luck.

Thanks, these are all great suggestions.

I've got a methodical system. Numbered all my boxes and have a notebook with box number, it's contents and what room it belongs to.

We have a holiday booked in 11 weeks so we're taking all our holiday/summer stuff with us to my parents.

I've found a storage place and it's reasonable so I've signed up for 8 weeks at. 50% discount. We can access it now so can even begin to take a few boxes etc down in the car. It's only 2 miles away.

I've had an offer accepted on a house 2 weeks ago and the seller has an inherited property to move into so I'm hoping it will only be another 10-15 weeks at most.
