Would you live in a flat where the only bedroom is on a mezzanine?

The mezzanine is over/open to the kitchen/living/dining room. So this effectively means that it feels like one big space.

It also means that if you have guests over to sleep on a sofa bed, you're all sharing one room. What if someone farts in their sleep? etc.

There are lots of old factories that have been converted into these near me. Two single male friends rented one when we were younger and they never said they had any issues with privacy but I bet they heard things they'd rather not.

They're so lovely that I regularly look at them on right move and think about if DH and I separated and what I would do but I don't think I'd be able to bring myself to buy but would definitely rent.

commonground · 02/05/2024 20:57

Could you install shutters. So you could open them in the day and close at night.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 02/05/2024 21:03

We rented a small house like this once where the large balcony was described as a bedroom however there were also two smallish side-rooms so we redesignated the balcony as "sitting room" and slept in the side-rooms. No way would I sleep in what eoukd be effectively a public part of the house.

There are flats like this near me, very posh, very expensive:
https://www.zoopla.co.uk/property-history/flat-28/alpha-house/4-beta-place/london/sw4-7qn/60574654/

I looked at one and decided it was too weird. (Also way too expensive!)

twersa · 02/05/2024 21:04

No way. Lots of flats like this where we used to live, converted lofts. Often they were 2 bed flats, which is worse really, because it implies that there would always be another person living there (outside of a couple). You'd never get any privacy for sex or a wank. I wouldn't like it even as a 1 bed just for me and DH, I go to bed hours after him and need the light on and to be able to watch TV in the living room.

JoniBlue · 02/05/2024 21:07

Nope.

WarshipRocinante · 02/05/2024 21:09

That sounds exactly like my first flat. I loved mine.

Chypre · 02/05/2024 21:12

No. Recently were staying in airbnb of such configuration, could smell the takeaway delivery from the bed despite the fan and open window... Apparently smell rises to the top, just like warm air.

Sunriseorange · 02/05/2024 21:13

If I was living alone then yes

Bunnyhopskip · 02/05/2024 21:15

Could you put some curtains up so you can section off the mezzanine if needed? I love quirky layouts like this, so I would try and make it work if it was me! We have a 3 storey with a mezzanine, ground floor is a huge living room with double hieghted ceilings, then the kitchen diner overlooks the living room. The stairs to become tiresome, but I wouldn't want to live in a normal house now, as the quirkiness makes it special.

Trainbother · 02/05/2024 21:22

It might not a be a first choice, but if the space, location and cost were otherwise good, I would. The only guests I'm likely to have are the kind where you'd all bunk in together if necessary anyway. I don't understand how so many people seem to have house guests they don't like or are uncomfortable with!

Roryhon · 02/05/2024 21:30

Could you not put a proper wall in and make it into an actual bedroom rather than a mezzanine?

grandkk454 · 02/05/2024 21:48

I lived in something similar (old converted space with a small balcony) in central London for around five years and I loved it. I had a spiral staircase that went up to the mezzanine with an en suite. Downstairs had a lovely entertaining space so it worked well. I found it essential to have a Dyson air con unit for air flow.

Justploddingonandon · 02/05/2024 21:59

No, no way unless ( though might have rented one when much younger and living alone). I've stayed in a couple of holiday places with the double height and mezzanine but with an actual proper wall. That's fine, I don't understand why would anyone would not just build it like that.

NewName24 · 02/05/2024 22:13

Yeah it's a high spec apartment. The living room has a double height ceiling and huge windows, and then the mezzanine is a proper floor with a large en suite.

This changes things for me.
I was going to say that, whereas I wouldn't buy a property like that, it would probably be okay to rent for a few months if a bedsit is all you can afford. As long as it has been properly checked for fire regs etc, with the bed above the kitchen, effectively on a shelf, and as long as there were all the proper smoke alarms, etc.
But if I had enough money to have a choice, then no, I wouldn't dream of it.

Sallysoup · 03/05/2024 07:48

I imagine a kitchen fire would quickly spread to the mezzanine? I wonder how easy it would be to get out in a situation like that, if it started while you were asleep.

Heulog · 03/05/2024 07:57

Quite a few of them come up and sit for ages on the market near me. I think the problem being that they are priced very similarly to a 2-3 bed house.

BelindaOkra · 03/05/2024 07:59

Yes if I lived alone.

Chersfrozenface · 03/05/2024 08:02

They're just posh bedsits.

Downthemedow · 03/05/2024 08:03

My sister lived in an apartment like that - it was huge with big windows and it seemed great at first but it was impossible to get it dark enough to sleep in. If it’s configured so that that’s not an issue, I’d go for it (and tell guests to pay for a hotel!)

SevenSeasOfRhye · 03/05/2024 08:06

I really like the appearance of a mezzanine. I very rarely have house guests so it wouldn't put me off. If I often had people staying over, I wouldn't, as no matter how it was set up it wouldn't feel very private and I snore like a tractor so no one would get any sleep!

CarryOnCharon · 03/05/2024 08:07

Yes, if it were just me.

I probably wouldn’t want guests to stay in, effectively my room, as I’m old 😃

Eminybob · 02/05/2024 20:53

Do you have a link to the listing? Would love to have a nosy. Sounds lovely.

If not keen on the mezzanine could you wall it in?

I'd love to see it too. Mezzanine's are quite unusual.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 03/05/2024 20:22

Trawling through rightmove to find some in my town. Unfortunately the ones I've seen in real life can't be found. It's st Michael's road in Northampton - they converted old factories.
