No fence - what to do

Hi ladies

my fence blew down in the high winds we had in January. I own my home but the fence boundary is actually owned by the managing agent of a block of flats that my home backs onto - my garden backs onto their car park and the fence is obviously what separates us.

with the fence down my entire garden is exposed and worst of all, the people in the flats can see in completely. now the nice weather is here I can’t even sit outside with DD.

I’ve got some Harris fencing (like what they have at festivals) where the fence used to be just to ensure it’s safe and no one can access. Obviously I want to put something on top of the fencing so that no one can see in but I don’t know what? Any ideas?

I did have some bamboo fencing type thing that we tied on but with the bad weather and wind the bamboo was lifting and became a wind trap so the Harris fencing nearly blew down too!!

really want to get it sorted before summer. I’m on mat leave too so ££ isn’t great so if anyone has any cheap ideas it would be appreciated!

Have you tried writing to the management company of the flats? They may not even be aware the fence is down and it would be their responsibility to repair or replace it.

you ask the managing agents for goodness sakes

PragmaticWench · 01/05/2024 16:07

I wouldn't waste money on trying to covet it up, I'd be raising a stink with the boundary owner to get the fence replaced.

SoupDragon · 01/05/2024 16:09

the boundary owner doesn't need to do anything unfortunately. They don't have to put a physical fence there at all.

LIZS · 01/05/2024 16:43

If you want a screened garden put a fence within the boundary. The management company could take ages and are not obliged to replace it.

Notyetthere · 02/05/2024 04:40

Like previous poster, boundary owner doesn't have to put up a fence. If you want the privacy then you can erect your own fence.

I'd contact the company, be very nice, and hope they help out

Erlouise · 03/05/2024 19:57

Hi all sorry didn’t make it clear, I have contacted the company of course. They have refused to do it as of yet as it costs a lot of money, hence my question as to ideas that could be used to cover up the Harris fencing in the meantime so people can’t see through into the garden.

they will review the decision which is why we haven’t paid out for our own fence yet, and also reluctant as not our boundary so just trying to think of alternatives until the situation is resolved.

@marzipanlover81 what a rude reply. I obviously would have asked them but thank you for being so rude.

But haras fencing costs a small fortune. If you want a solution for this summer you may have to do it yourself.
