Carronite (or similar) baths

Has anyone got one? We are redoing the bathroom, and they were recommended as a good substitute for the cast iron bath we have now. I like the cast iron one, as it keeps the water hot and is deeper than acrylic baths. The bathroom fitter we are probably going with doesn't know much about them, but is going to find out and feed back. He has, however, priced them up and it will be an extra £900 over the cost of an acrylic bath. We could run to that, but it's a lot of extra money if there's nothing particularly good about them, so I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts. Do you have one? Do you wish you'd got one? Regret getting one? Anything, really.

Oh, and I suspect that Carronite is a brand name and that there are others out there. I'm not brand loyal - I'm talking about the concept rather than the brand.

Good quality baths and a brand that has been around for years. I considered a carronite bath last year but in the end I went for a steel tub for the super deep bathing. I have the Bette Ocean and I love it. A proper soaker tub.
Also, check out builders merchants once you know which bath you want, but the whole suite and haggle on price. Your builder if buying for you might be adding on a markup. It'll be probably be cheaper for you to buy.

I had one installed on the plumber’s recommendation some years ago when we refurbished a house, it was wonderful, longer and deeper than average, really good quality finish and the water seemed to stay warmer for longer too.

Thanks, both of you, that's helpful. It's the heat retention that attracts me to them, so it's good to know that that works.

We got one after a stupid amount of research - we wanted a wide, deep one for overhead shower as well as baths. It has lasted well and doesn't give or feel flimsy like acrylic ones can.

SisterImpera · 26/04/2024 22:42

We got one a couple of years ago! As others said, it holds the heat really well and does not feel at all flimsy or creaky. But I’m pretty sure we didn’t pay all that much for it, definitely not £900 more than an equivalent acrylic one.

We have two carronite baths. One we put in nearly 20 years ago and is still sturdy and decent. Long and extra deep normal shape.

Then when we did our en-suite we put another one in but a big bow-fronted one. It is lovely.

They are definitely sturdy and feel quality. The one in our en-suite is now 15 years old too and you really wouldn’t tell with either of them.

Definitely worth the extra money in our opinion. We did manage to haggle a discount on them though, can’t remember which plumbers merchants but most were easily willing to discount as they would do for tradesmen.

Reallyitsonlyme · 26/04/2024 22:56

Carronite is indeed a brand name but I think they have a specific product which is patented. The same company does many baths in ‘normal’ and also in ‘carronite’.

I think we ordered ours online and got it cheaper, sorry I can’t remember where from now.

Hi OP, what bath did you end up getting? I've come across this thread as I'm looking for a strong bathtub that will be used mainly for showering so need a strong tub.

I've got the Carron brochure in front of me. People saying they are super strong, assuming you got a 'Carronite' bath rather than a regular bath by Carron?

Any tips appreciated! Someone recommended Waters to me but they are super expensive. It's a minefield! Thanks.

I did get a Carronite one. It’s very new, so I can’t say much about longevity, but it looks good, is wide and deep, and it keeps the water hot. I’m very happy with it.

Hi OP, I’m considering a carronite bath (halcyon d) with coloured panels. Did you get coloured panels with yours? How are you finding it so far? Thanks in advance

Anonemus · 16/02/2025 21:59

Hey there did you go for one in the end? Would you recommend ? Thinking of getting the halcyon d with coloured panels myself. Would be grateful if your thoughts on the tub

ShyMaryEllen · 16/02/2025 22:57

Hi. Yes we got one and I really like it. It has a panel to match the cupboards - no end panels as it is built into an alcove. I would recommend Caronite. It holds heat well and feels as sturdy as the cast iron one it replaced. They are heavy, so need a frame to support them. This can’t be seen, but if you are DIYing, it’s worth knowing.
