What to with a 19ft blank living room wall

We are in the middle of renovating and unsure how to break up this rather large and blank wall. The room is very bright and airy but it just feels so long, especially this wall.

Has anyone got any ideas on what to do? Originally we were thinking about colour blocking in the middles and running that colour over the ceiling then back down to the fireplace to attempt to break it up a bit and bring the focus around the fireplace.

I've attached an approx floor plan

And this is approximately what the layout is like currently.

A large print or painting in the middle?

AnotherFamilyNightmare · 25/04/2024 18:03

What is the long thin thing by the patio doors?

TwittleBee · 25/04/2024 18:05

Toy storage @AnotherFamilyNightmare , just a row of ikea trofasts.

I think if you put your long sofa at right angles to the fireplace, you'll automatically break up the wall. Have it facing the window and radiator, with end tables, coffee table in front of it, two armchairs facing it either side of the window, then you can put a regular sized painting or a couple of prints on the wall. Put the long console table along the back of the sofa, with photos / plants etc on it. You'll easily have space for whatever suits your life best in terms of access in and out of the patio doors (wicker chairs, dining table, console table for display and bench along the wall etc). Then you can put a mirror or something up on that end of the wall, near the patio doors.

Edited to add: just seen you have toy storage boxes and not a console table. Perfect! Push that up against the back of the sofa and you'll have a lovely play area between it and the patio doors.

I just feel like it would have to be huge @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats And I've been struggling to find anything I think I like that much as this was what DH suggested.

I'm also struggling with how we paint this room. Do we colour drench? Do we keep ceilings and woodwork white? Etc!

I'm not used to having a room this size or layout!

I think we would need a new sofa unfortunately and we have only just got this one @shenandoahvalley But yes, can totally see how they'd work beautifully!

What's the flooring like?

In my house I have wooden floors (stained like mahogany) and a turquoise wall which really works (I would never have chosen this, it was there when I bought!) but something like that wouldn't have fit with eg cream carpets IMO

What do you use the room for? Is it your main living area? Is there a TV in the room that needs taking into account in seating placement?

AmaryllisChorus · 25/04/2024 18:15

Bookcases or good shelving to display pottery or art objects.
A big painting or mirror or series of paintings or photos grouped together.

Crispynoodle · 25/04/2024 18:17

I have a large original oil painting on canvas on mine

LadySybilRamekin · 25/04/2024 18:18

Get a mural! Perhaps not for everyone but I'd love a forest mural.

TwittleBee · 25/04/2024 18:18

No TV @AnotherFamilyNightmare , it's our main living room / kids play area.

Wood flooring @IamaRevenant

90" TV with cinema speakers each side. Put a photo on here and then delete your account and never show your face again Grin

How about a huge print or wallpaper mural from Surface View?

They have an amazing selection, you can get anything from reproductions from museums to modern abstract stuff.

No TV makes it easier!

I would split the room into 2 zones to visually break up the room eg 1/3rd as a play area and 2/3rds sitting area. I would probably swap the Trofast for something taller and a bit prettier.

If you have taller furniture or a gallery wall of pictures in 1/3 of the room so it is “vertical” in design and 2/3 has more horizontal lines eg the sofa with just a few taller items eg a plant, candelabra, picture above the fireplace etc, the 2 visually different zones will make the room feel less long and thin. Or you could have a large rug in one zone, bare wood in the other, or vary the colour palette in one zone eg a darker version of the same palette or accent colours in one zone only, or lots of plants in one zone… There are a million ways to do it. The ratio of 2/3 and 1/3 always looks good though.

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense and can picture the zoning @AnotherFamilyNightmare shall have a play around with ideas!
