Original features dilemma

We’ve just moved into a 1980s property. It has lights hung close to the windows, artex ceilings and teeny tiny skirting boards. I had planned to change all of these but am already starting to warm to the lights and ceilings. I’m unsure what to do about the skirting boards - I like really high ones and wanted to add panelling in some of the rooms. Should I leave or replace? Photo attached - although ignore radiator and blinds which are definitely on their way out 🙂

It's often about proportion. We live in an Edwardian house with 12 foot high ceilings. A low skirting board would look out of place there but you might find a high skirting takes up too much of your wall.

I'm not sure "original features" really applies to 80s built houses, does it?

Either way, I wouldn't try to make the house into something it's not. Tall skirting boards and wooden panelling are generally associated with Victorian properties, so I wouldn't try and make your house something it's not.

Although I do know there is a trend at the moment for panelling, but I think, like many other trends, it will date and you would just be pulling it out in a few years.

If you like the things, leave them, don't give yourself unnecessary work.

That light does look awfully close to the window though, doesn't it! Are they not usually in the middle of the room?
