You can tile over tiles. Is that an option?

StamppotAndGravy · 21/04/2024 14:22

They are spectacularly ugly :D I quite admire the confidence of whoever originally chose them.

You should be able to coal or smash them off. It mostly depends what you want to replace them with

StamppotAndGravy · 21/04/2024 14:22

Chisel, sorry

Endlessdecorating · 21/04/2024 14:26

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if the bumpy bit at the bottom would allow me to tile over them. I was looking at that Jes Rose Vinyl and stick on tiles but may need to try and remove first.

I will have a go at removing with a chisel and see how it goes. Hopefully I’m not going to be left with a giant hole in the plasterboard 🙈.

Good luck!

StamppotAndGravy · 21/04/2024 14:35

Chisel them gently. Tile grout is quite soft so you'll be able to rub it flat with coarse sandpaper then stick tile stickers over the top. It would be more of a problem if you wanted flat plaster after

Ta dah!!

Thanks for all your help. Hopefully with some heavy sanding and filling it might be suitable for some tiles.

Ooh, looking good!

PTSDBarbiegirl · 21/04/2024 15:25

Tile over them and use a border tile and grout to fill top spot.

Autumn1990 · 21/04/2024 15:26

I wouldn’t sand and fill, just put new tiles on

Scarletttulips · 21/04/2024 15:28

How did two of you not notice OP has taken them off?

well done OP

Yay!

That looks good. Hopefully you just need to sand the zig zag edges, or maybe the tiles will overlap.

Endlessdecorating · 21/04/2024 15:43

There is some adhesive of some sort where the pebble things were. Any suggestions how to get that stuff off? It’s not sanding, unfortunately.

I’m hoping to use stick on tiles as my poor DIY skills are not up to proper tiling!

Keep scraping it with a chisel.

TBH, it would be easier to tile than put stick ons on that, the tile glue has a thickness which will mask the unevenness underneath. Just put tile glue on both the tile and the wall, and it should be fine.

PrimalLass · 21/04/2024 16:04

A super scraper

Endlessdecorating · 21/04/2024 16:04

Ah I didn’t realise you could get tile glue. I thought it would need to be grout of some sort. Every day is a DIY learning day for me! Thank you!

You use tile glue to stick the tiles to the wall, then grout the gaps between the tiles.

PrimalLass · 21/04/2024 17:28

This is what I meant. Remove the rest of the crap from the wall with something like this.

BLOSTM 5" Wallpaper Scraper - Long Handle Heavy Duty Scraper Tool with 5-Inch Blade & Soft Grip, Wide Head Tile Scraper Removes Wallpaper, Vinyl Flooring, Tiles, Paint & More - Includes 3 Spare Blades amzn.eu/d/9jMGap6

@PrimalLass that scraper looks fabulous thank you!

When I did similar I just worked out the size I needed to cover and got a large tile which covered that area so that I didn't need to grout between any tiles. Then all you need to do is put sealant between the tile and the sink - we also put some beading around the edge of the tile to finish it off but not necessary!

Melroses · 21/04/2024 22:25

You can put sealant between the wall and sink, tile, then put sealant between the tile and sink. Belt and braces.
