Removals Cost?

Hi,

We're hopefully getting close to exchange now. I'm trying to decide whether to hire a removal company or hire a lorry that a family member can drive and do it ourselves.

3 bedroom house in the south west and only moving about 10 miles.

If you've moved or got quotes recently, how much did it cost?

Thank you.

We’ll be paying our movers £2.3k to pack our 3-bed semi the day before (so we have lots of time to clean / don’t feel pressured) and then move us about 20 mins down the road, including insurance and a late key waiver.

It would be £500 less if we did it in one day but we want the cleaning time.

Not sure how much it would cost without the packing service as I wouldn’t want to do that.

Removals are so expensive! We’ve been getting quotes for just removals not the packing as we’re trying to save the money for making improvements to the new house. Not having the company packing for us can save us £750+ To some people that’s not a lot of money, but to us it’s a lot. We once moved ourselves by hiring a Luton. It was savage and we decided never to do that again. If you can, I’d recommend you atleast try to get a company to do the removal and you pack yourself. You can get them to do 2 separate quotes for you so you can see the difference in price.

We are moving a 4 bed detatched over 200 miles which will take 2 days using a removal company and its costing is £2,700.

For this they are doing everything for us.

I'm in the south West. Cost us 1800 in February to fully pack a 3 bed house and move 30 miles away

Edited

Forgot to say we also had a quote for £1.7k but we liked the other company more.

I'm south west and paid £1k for movers to shift us 9 miles. A rammed to gills 2 bed terrace on a walkway about 30m from the road, to a 5 bed up some steps. We packed everything, they moved us.

Churchview · 20/04/2024 21:19

I'm in the south west too. We found proper removal companies very expensive so I went on the local facebook group and asked for recommendations. Found a lovely local bloke who had a team of three people who moved us (about 7 miles, three bed house) for £1,500.00.

I've moved with a hired van several times and this was the first time I've had a team of professionals to help - oh my goodness the bliss of not having to cart everything up and down stairs.

Seahorsesplendour · 20/04/2024 21:24

were in the midlands We had 3 quotes to move 5 miles out of a 3 bed end terrace cheapest was £900 most expensive was £2200 we went for the middle as had 2 men 2 vans for as long as needed this was £1100 they were great we packed up boxes etc byt was still a lot to move & dismantle on the day. Good luck!

We're moving on Friday from London to the south coast.

We've packed everything ourselves and got a local firm to move it.

A three bed terrace with a fair bit of 'stuff' is costing us £1500.00

We got three quotes which came in from £1200.00 to £2000.00 and went with the firm we have because they were young, enthusiastic and communicative.

Karmatime · 21/04/2024 08:35

I’ve moved twice in the last couple of years. £2000 for a 250 mile move and then about £700 to move a mile down the road. 2 bed house, we didn’t pay for packing either time. The first movers were a large professional company, the second were a smaller local firm who were the cheapest quote. The first guys were amazing, so fast and efficient. The second not so much, they took ages and made a botch job of reassembling furniture (which we had paid extra for them to do).
If I ever move again I’d definitely wouldn’t go for the cheapest.

Sounds like you're gearing up for quite the adventure moving from the UK to Spain! Moving can be a big change, but it's also a chance for a fresh start and new beginnings. When it comes to the nitty-gritty of shifting your household goods, I've got a few thoughts.

Using commercial movers can be a lifesaver—no more fretting about the heavy lifting! They'll take care of your belongings like they're precious cargo and get them from point A to point B with minimal fuss. Trusting professionals can make the process as smooth as butter on a hot day!

One piece of advice: double-check those quotes and make sure the https://discountmoving.ca/ is reputable. We want you sipping sangria in no time, not dealing with a box of broken dishes.

We're paying £1k for a local removals company to move us a couple of miles to the next village - 3 bed house, doing the packing ourselves, but they're dismantling beds for us. North West.

Scottishdreams1991 · 22/04/2024 11:39

3 bed into a 3 bed packed ourselves but hired moving company. £500 only 25 mins away

runningmom · 22/04/2024 17:34

When people say pack yourself……what does that mean? As in fold all clothes, towels, box up plates etc? I think I could do that but I definitely need furniture to be reassembled the other end!!! So I’ll pay extra for that even though I’m only moving a mile away.
How much is insurance on top eg if completion date changes?

Norhymeorreason · 22/04/2024 17:45

@runningmom you do have to pay extra for dismantling and reassembling of furniture. Our removers have charged £60 to dismantle and reassemble beds, which I think is really cheap!

The removers also told us not to pack anything in drawer units - they take it as is. That's made a big difference to the amount of packing work for us!

Norhymeorreason · 22/04/2024 17:45

And you don't need to fold and pack clothes in wardrobes- packers should bring wardrobe boxes for you to hang them in.

honeyandfizz · 22/04/2024 17:50

I moved last July not long the death of my Father, I was in no fit state to be packing and told the removals firm I did not wish to lift a finger. They dismantled and reassembled wardrobes and beds, full packing service and charged 1.9k to move from a 3 bed terrace a few miles up the road. Worth every single penny, on move day we sat with bags of chips whilst they did all the graft!

runningmom · 22/04/2024 17:55

Thank you. I’ve budgeted to pay for it all though hoping I can pack. I’m moving to a three storey home as a single mom of two plus a dog do no way I can reassemble wardrobes and beds the same day!!!!!

How long before exchange was being talked about did people get quotes?

YourNimblePeachTraybake · 22/04/2024 18:03

I just moved today. Paid £480 to move five miles. Two van loads.

A few weeks ahead although mine wouldn't confirm until I had exchanged as they had other clients in the same boat.

We’re not discussing exchange yet and we’ve got quotes so we’ll be ready when we do.

Movers have said to check availability with them when we do talk dates and then confirm once we’ve exchanged.

runningmom · 23/04/2024 17:57

Thank you all. Although we’ve started searches/enquiries and had more to offers at the bottom of the chain, the top of chain was only confirmed ten days ago so we are likely a few months 😩 off even thinking if exchange. However there’s at least 3 of us in the chain staying local so wondering how quick removals will get booked up and if it’s too early to get quotes (I think it is).
