We have a packing service coming monday, is there anything I should do other that sort stuff ready to go? Anyone used this service?

You do nothing. That's why it's such a great service that I will use every time I move!

Caspianberg · 20/04/2024 14:07

Sort through anything you don’t want packed. Anything to throw or charity also, save packing unwanted stuff

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/04/2024 14:22

Keep back anything you'll want on the morning of your move - kettle, mugs, pint of milk, cleaning products, hoover, toiletries, clothes etc. Otherwise they'll pack everything, absolutely everything.

Empty all your indoor bins and just have one liner on the go for the final evening/day. Otherwise your bins with rubbish in will be going with you!

Presuming you've already had a pre-moving clearout, then no! We moved everything we didn't want packed that we needed for either moving day, to clean after the movers had done their job or personal items we wanted with us into our en-suite and just said not to pack anything in there.

We were moving to more bedrooms, so I did a print out of the floor plan of the house we were moving to and numbered the bedrooms so they could label the boxes as they packed to which room they would be moving them into. It (mostly) worked a treat.

As others have said they literally pack everything, so you need to make sure you pack separately the things you need immediately you reach your new house and keep that in the car so it doesn’t get packed.

I moved twice in 10mths (sold house, rented, bought house) and used this service twice and it was fabulously easy. Well worth the money.

Pack anything personal or valuable that you wouldn't want them to touch/see. Get rid of junk so you're not moving rubbish.
Keep cleaning materials, tea making stuff and the stuff you need immediately in your new place separate- they either go last onto the van or in your car.

oh i think i may have sorted too much, like before a cleaner comes!

These are great tips thanks

I always pack my underwear and private stuff.

We shoved things like work laptops in the boot of the car so we could actually go to work after moving day without unpacking every box to find them.

We put kettle etc in the bath with a ‘do not pack’ sign on top.

We caught one cat and put her in the garage. We failed to catch the other, which was an utter pain when she then fled and we spent all evening trying to tempt her close enough to grab her (luckily we were moving about a five minute drive away).

They will pack everything not removed by yourselves (even a bin full of paper in our case) so just remove anything you don't want packed ahead of them arriving on Monday. Once they are in your house it's chaos so remove anything ahead of them actually arriving. Make sure laptops/phones/chargers etc are out of their reach or they will be boxed up before you can say Wait a minute.

I had to stop the packers putting damp towels in the last couple of boxes on moving day. We took the vacuum cleaner, cleaning things, kettle, mugs, a tool kit, extension leads, remote controls and bedding, etc separate and took them in our cars. Just means you don't need to unpack loads of boxes for the first night in the new place.

We’re using this for our upcoming move so I’ve been researching this and have a tip to add. Make sure everyone has shoes on as any shoes not being worn are getting packed!
