Is warwick safe?

Hi everyone. Really long story but we are seemingly going to be moving to Warwick provided our checks go through. We are living in Manchester at the moment and have done for 17 years but a really deprived and unsafe area (I was attacked and really haven’t had a good time here) amongst other issues. The area we live in is really difficult to have a sense of community due to language barriers and people not speaking English. Anyway, we have been offered a property in Warwick and I’m just looking to see if anyone has any opinions on it?

We don’t care if it’s not near anything and it’s a quote on quote boring town, but we just want to know that we will have a sense of community and will at least feel safe walking the streets.

opinions would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure why you think it's boring or not near anything? It's a lovely market town, very close to Leamington which is a bit more bustling. And with easy access to most of the country. And yes, safe.

ForMauveHedgehog · 10/04/2024 19:39

Brilliant thanks! I have read some other threads where others have said it’s a fairly small town and Leamington has more going for it but I suppose that really isn’t our main focus!

thanks for the reply :)

Warwick and Leamington are both very nice towns, there's lots going on. Stratford upon Avon is also not thst far from there. Lots of nice countryside around it.

WingingIt101 · 10/04/2024 19:45

I live in the area and it's lovely. I feel very safe here and love that it's where my daughters are growing up.

Do you know which area of Warwick the home is in?

ah brill! That’s so nice to hear and has definitely reassured us!

It’s round the corner from the main town centre. We’ve had a look on google maps and it looks like a lovely little town and the street it’s on looks quite decent too :)

It's as middle England as you can get. Very safe. The biggest danger may be a random missile from the trebuchet at the castle. Lots of beautiful countryside nearby and plenty of culture to access at the university (which is ten miles away on the edge of Coventry) arts centre. I'm very biased as I was a student at the university many moons ago.

Isn't the point of a trebuchet that it's fired AT a castle rather than from WITHIN it? misses point of thread, unlike a trebuchet which doesn't miss when it has a target as big as a castle

Hahaha the castle does look amazing! Excited to see that. Thanks for the reply

They used to have trebuchet demonstrations within the castle grounds. Then a flaming missile set fire to the boat house so they had a rethink for a while. Still wouldn't trust a trebuchet 😂

I'd like to have seen that. Reading this thread inspired me to look up Edward I's trebuchet War Wolf and I found a rather interesting podcast site. And found out that Warwick is a pleasant place to live as well.

I am from Warwick and it is so very quintessentially English. The castle, St Nics Park with it's model golf course, boating on the river....very lovely and safe.

HappierTimesAhead · 10/04/2024 20:56

Also, very different to Manchester!

MIL lives in Warwick, is in her 70s and is happy to walk to and from the shops on her own. It does have a couple of ‘questionable’ areas but nothing in comparison to moss side! Warwick and Leam are slowly creeping towards each other so the outskirts of both feel a bit urban sprawl (especially the crammed in new builds near the M40 junction) but generally it’s the definition of a Mumsnet ‘naice’ area. Go for breakfast at Warwick Street Kitchen 😊

DelphiniumBlue · 10/04/2024 21:13

A close relative lives there, and it is quiet and safe, if a bit dull. Lots of tourists in the summer, and some very nice charity shops.

Hahaha! Great! As long as it’s NOTHING like moss side or Hulme areas I think we will get along fine over there! Good to know. I suppose all areas have a couple of ‘dodgy’ areas but I just hope it’s nothing like Manchester. Thanks for the response :)

Ah lovely! I’ve had a look at the town centre and seems up my street honestly. I don’t like busy towns and it just seems perfect for us.

I had a bad experience in Warwick. I was reading in a park, and kicked off my shoes. I looked up and realised that a peacock was pecking in the approximate vicinity of my toes.

I hate peacocks. Always have. I'm still traumatised years later.

Other than random bird attacks, Warwick is lovely.

Would be lying if I said my heart didn’t drop reading that at first glance 😮‍💨

Good job we don’t mind peacocks😆!! Thank you!

😂Sorry for laughing. I am not laughing at your trauma.

YouveGotAFastCar · 10/04/2024 21:42

Yeah, it’s fine. Nice enough but a bit dull when you’ve been there a while. The trebuchet is back, but there’s a lot more safety restrictions on it now; they don’t tend to change direction or let visitors aim it anymore. You can usually still help to fire it! I was there when it set the roof on fire.

Theres a few questionable areas that I’d not choose to live in, but nothing like Moss Side, and it’s overall a nice place to live. Leamington has a bit more going on, and Stratford isn’t too far away, although all three are struggling a lot with public transport routes being cancelled and shops shutting on the high streets at the moment. I shouldn’t think that’s limited to these areas, but it might feel a bit different to Manchester for that reason… Theres some good places to eat in Warwick, coffee shops, antiques shops, but not many places to actually shop for things like clothes or gifts or anything.

The castle is brilliant and well worth the season ticket cost if you live nearby.

Well poo. What's the point of having a trebuchet if you can't wreak a bit of havoc and destruction with it?
