Washing machine in new kitchen or not

Hi may I please ask for opinion on washing machines in kitchens? I am playing with config options for my extension which is shower room and a new kitchen open plan into sitting/garden room. I've a long-held belief to keep wm outside kitchen if possible, I would love to hear if I'm just being prejudiced and that's rubbish.

Background - currently my wm isn't in kitchen so it's not based on experience (also is not integrated). I'm single no DC, not running a load daily. Original extension plan puts wm in neighbouring shower room but wall can move if it is out. If it goes into kitchen then I get real estate to address some config issues with other kitchen appliance placement. It would be right up at the non sitting end of the open plan kitchen/garden room.

Part 2 of same(ish) question is - is my belief that separate wm and tumble drier are the only way forward similar prejudice and a single washer dryer is in fact totally fine? Not an option not to have a drier, please don't judge me but I use mine every wash.

I will love to hear any thoughts and TIA!!! PLENTY of other information I can provide but that's the bare bones.

For a single? Absolutely fine to have a washer dryer in the kitchen IMO. Especially if you tend to not use the dryer unless absolutely necessary.

I wouldn't advocate for either if there were more of you living there.

MrsJamin · 08/04/2024 06:46

I would have it out of the kitchen because it makes so much noise.

CormorantStrikesBack · 08/04/2024 06:47

How much do you want or need the shower room wall to be moved? I’d prefer to keep them out the kitchen if possible estimate a kitchen with an open plan seating area.

Scarletttulips · 08/04/2024 06:48

Washing machine in the kitchen is fine, have it built in if necessary.

Depends on the size of the property if you need a drier as well - or at least space for one.

If selling a 4 bed house probably would need room.

You can get built in cupboards and pit it in the garden room instead of there’s space - I am considering a second breakfast bar going into the additional room and having mine under it. So kitchen cupboards one side and washer drier the other.

pilates · 08/04/2024 06:50

If you have the room to keep out of the kitchen I would.

VisitationRights · 08/04/2024 06:56

Definitely out of the kitchen. Is there room for a utility/mud room? That’s the ideal place but a shower room works well two.

you can get full size stackable machine, so the dryer sits above the washing machine, that can save space for you in the shower room.

and don’t get a combo machine, they are rubbish!

NannyGythaOgg · 08/04/2024 07:04

Combined machines are crap. Can only dry half load at a time.
My washer and dryer (totally recommend heat pump) are in my en suite/dressing room and it's brilliant (I too live alone)

  1. Majority of washing is clothes so where better than where my clothes are
  2. A dedicated space - no crumbs or grease around
  3. A dedicated space, so clothes left on top aren't messing up the kitchen/ living space.
  4. Hangers are always handy for immediately rehanging clothes straight out of the tumble dryer
SpringOfContentment · 08/04/2024 07:11

Washing machine in a kitchen I would be ok with.
Washing machine in the livingroom (and if you have open plan, that's where it is), and a sensible alternative why would you subject yourself to the noise?

user09876543 · 08/04/2024 07:15

Stack them and put them in the shower room (plug will need to be outside the shower room unless it’s a very large space).

or of you have an airing cupboard get rid of it and put them there.

gestroopd · 08/04/2024 07:17

The kitchen is open plan into siting/garden room. Do you want to be in there with the wm running? That's the question really.

mondaytosunday · 08/04/2024 07:20

It was something I really struggled with when I moved to this country - it's something I'd never seen before! I understand w/m in bathrooms just about, but not in kitchens and not on the floor where most washing is generated?
Any chance you could stick it upstairs? I deepened a hall closet (pushing back in to the spare room, then squaring off the resulting alcove in that room with a built in wardrobe). And I'm using the combined washer/dryer that the sellers left behind which works fine - it's only not practical if you need to do more than a couple loads a day as you obviously can't have a wash on while the dryer is going, but even with two kids at home the machine was not on daily.
So in your case I'd leave it in the shower room.

Scarletttulips · 08/04/2024 07:24

What an hour 3 times a week?

FantaIsFine · 08/04/2024 07:27

Already brilliant feedback thank you any more who would share will be amazing!!!

Hoping I can fit JUST into a utility area. Just posted another about door width which may make an impact on that. "Utility area" would be in walkway through to kitchen which I am absolutely fine with if dimensions permit and would possibly actually prefer.

If I can get it out of shower room I can have a bit of additional counter top which makes my ideal config in kitchen possible without compromise. Also in fact gives me enough space for walk in shower. (Compromises to keep in shower room include fridge-oven-sink-dw-hob vs fridge-oven-hob-dw-sink which is my ideal). Or 4 ring hob vs 5 for a smidgen more counter. Or under counter oven(s) or fridge and freezer, ideal plan is tall for both and double oven, or use part of the ton of wall space the other side of kitchen for appliances which I wasn't intending as miles away. Or put hob in island which I would prefer to keep appliance free and not fixed)

It was one of the quoting builders said I should think about reducing shower room dimensions to claim some extra kitchen. The nib in the kitchen for the steel is mainly what's created the dilemma in the first place obviously can't move. Clearly ALL of these are first world problems/solutions.

But I didn't want to take the p*ss and ask for feedback on all points at the outset. Any input on any of these MASSIVELY gratefully received.

When I say wm in shower room I would keep separate ones anyway BTW. Just using shorthand for the floor area itself. Also I definitely don't want wm in sitting room; kitchen in my head is a push but that's why I'm so interested in feedback for feasibility and acceptance levels, I'm not wedded to it.

Thanks everyone so much again!!!

If you can keep WM out of kitchen and put in shower room definitely do this, just due to the noise.

Ineffable23 · 08/04/2024 07:38

I had a combined washer drier and it was fine as a washer and basically useless as a drier. It was maybe 7 or 8 years ago now so maybe they have improved but I would avoid.

scruffydogstinks · 08/04/2024 07:42

Also is the shower room the only one in the house? If it's just you, and even if it's you a DP and a child, I'd get rid of the extra shower and have a downstairs loo with a stacked washer dryer in utility if that's an option , something along these lines...

I understand w/m in bathrooms just about, but not in kitchens and not on the floor where most washing is generated?

Surely it depends how you dry the majority of your washing though? I only use a dryer for towels, I line dry everything else, so it's easier to carry down dirty washing, than heavier, wet washing.

Librarybooker · 08/04/2024 10:37

So are you in US or Oz/NZ? I don’t know what you mean by getting ‘real estate’

Haha no I'm in UK

I guess I mean floor space although in the context of my thoughts here, it's more wall space

Apologies for any confusion!

If you frequently use a tumble dryer, then get separates.

If you do not have a separate living room, then put the washing machine in a different room if at all possible.

Stacked in a shower room is a good solution. Around the corner in a utility area is a reasonable compromise - though I would still look at how noisy the machines are when selecting them.
