Neighbours new fence

My neighbours installed a new fence last month. Part of the fence maybe around 3 meters is above 2 meters - it is 2.3 to be precise. Now I wouldn't ordinarily care because it's a nice fence but it's partly blocking the sunlight in my garden and I'm annoyed they installed it without asking if it is OK to be higher. The confusing bit is because there side has turf and ours has tiles theirs is higher so possibly on their end is lower than 2.3.

Would it be too pety for me to report them? Would they even be able to do anything about it if the fence is 2 meter on their side?

I'm not sure why people are giving OP a hard time.

She's saying the fence is 7ft5!!! That's very imposing unless you have a very large garden.

OP does it look out of place? Or have they followed suit of other neighbours?

I would highlight your concerns to them and see how they react

Believing8nSanta · 07/04/2024 14:30

@peppernuts thank you :)

It just looks weird as its more than 30 cm higher than the existing panel we have and on top of it, as its crappy panel, they built another layer to protect the top of the panel which means extra few cm on top of panel itself. It is imposing and it does look really bad aesthetically but in reality what they gonna do? Replace their whole fence?

I had a look on their end and their grass is on our level so it would be 2.3 m on their side as well so they are definitely in breach.

They did tell us they are changing their fence and said it will be higher than the old but it was supposed to be 2m not 30 cm higher. The old fence is around 1.8 m so you can imagine the difference is quite noticeable.

You can report to your local council and they will decide.

You can, but you will be at absolute war and how much sun is 0.3 metres really blocking.

TheMixedGirl · 07/04/2024 14:49

I wouldn't report. It may start a war. Plus even if they changed it I think you're allowed to add a trellis on top so you'd be in the same position.

Believing8nSanta · 07/04/2024 14:53

Ya I don't think it's worth reporting really but I personally have a strong sense for justice and just find it cheeky ... they know it's higher than regulated. They have done other things that they needed planning permission for and never got one so not their 1st time but ltimately I decided i just can't be arsed to deal with them and the council over a fence.

We reported our neighbour for exactly the same thing, height is around 8 foot I believe, or something like that. Im looking at it now. Changed our light in the kitchen

Council not the slightest bit interested and said theres no such thing as 'right to light' or wtte

We always want what others have. OP, can we swap places on a hot weekend sometime ? I’ll take your 7 foot fence, blocking my sunlight and give you access to the crappy 4ft fence my neighbours put up . Delight in watching them scratch their arses, while dodging the piles of dog crap gathered in the uncut garden to get to their rotting ‘mini bar’ . Enjoy the totally unwelcome conversations you will be forced to engage with every time you go to peg some washing out on the line and they spot you. As for sunbathing , yes there will be plenty of sun , although the shadow of a 20 stone beer belly leaning over the fence and asking if they can borrow your jump leads, coffee, milk, screwdriver, dining chairs , may spoil things a little. 😁

Is it possible for you to put up your own fence?

Believing8nSanta · 07/04/2024 15:14

@TellySavalashairbrush Made me laugh 😃 I'm sorry you have to experience the downside of low fences. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side 🤣

Buddleia is what you need, it will grow in a jiffy, right up to about 8 foot. Or more.

@ClematisBlue49 thank you :) appreciate the friendly response and advise!

Most of the rest ... you really need to chill out ... gosh some responses are so ridiculous and borderline offensive. I understand some people are bored but just enjoy a g&t, do something you like and have a lovely weekend!

BYEeeee

I'm beginning to understand the neighbours' need for a higher fence...

Why don't you just put up a higher fence on your side?

We had to spend nearly £3k to put fencing up on the side we own (small house but long garden) we can’t stretch to pay for the neighbours side who own their fence, sadly. Appreciate the suggestions for fast growing plants though.
