Carless developments

we have a proposal for a 6 house development here with no parking spaces as it's carless. but has 12 cycles spaces. I can't see it selling as it's not really a cycle friendly town and not a city.

What would stop buyers owning cars and just parking on the street?

Street parking restrictions.

It’s the sort of thing that would happen where I live. I’m very much in favour of reducing our dependence on cars, but it is a massive, long term programme and just not providing parking in a new development isn’t going to make any difference.

That will be interesting when you need a tradesman.

Answersunknown · 04/04/2024 12:42

Nothing stops them.

we had 40 flats built nearby with cycle only spaces.
they just park on the streets surrounding the block.
nightmare for all residents
Win win for developers who can pack in more flats without losing space for car parking and appear to give ‘green’ consideration!

Ah, that's one way around the green consideration, someone didn't think it through whilst ticking boxes.

i mean how do i say that will happen on the planning comments. i bet they will just go ahead anyway. The plans look all bling but the reality will be shite.

Look at what your local Council’s traffic plans are. That will give you an idea of how to argue.

And write down your concerns on your response. Better yet, talk to your neighbours and get them to voice the same concerns. Planning permission does get refused.

there are lots of us concerned so will look thatnks

I've seen it done where owners can only buy if they sign a legal agreement not to have a car.

I've also seen it done where surrounding roads are some sort of controlled parking zone - usually resident only- and the Council has undertaken to not issue permits to residents in the new properties.

How this works in reality in terms of visitors, workmen, deliveries etc I have no idea.

FestiveAuntFanny · 04/04/2024 13:30

There's a big carless development near us, all the internal roads are protected by bollards which go up and down for deliveries etc and there's a drop off loop for the school but every single flat and house has a parking space either underground or in a dedicated building near the road.

Sounds like your developers are just cheapskates and the council should be forcing them to provide spaces.

Macramepotholder · 04/04/2024 13:30

You can usually get visitor's permits for trades etc.

Greenbike · 04/04/2024 13:47

As PP have said, if you’re in a controlled parking zone then residents in the new development just won’t get a permit. In a way it works out better for existing residents as it means no additional traffic.

GasPanic · 04/04/2024 14:31

Carless development AKA you park in the place closest to your house that you are legally allowed to.
