Recommendations for new boiler - glow worm

DaisyDaisy2022 · 28/03/2024 10:05

We need a new boiler. Currently have a Worcester/Bosch Combi boiler that is about 15 yrs old. We've been recommended a glow worm by a plumber. Does anyone have any experience of whether these are good/bad? Or any other recommendations? Thank you

The gold standard ones are normally said to be Worcester Bosch or Valiant. Probably a little more expensive because of this. Have had both (currently have a new W-B which replaced a 20 year old WB that was in place when we moved in) and never had any issues.

No experience of Glo Worm, though!

Didn't even know glow worm still existed !

Plumbers tend to recommend boilers they are familiar with, as opposed to what is actually the best for you.

WB and Valiant are seen as the top brands although you will always find stuff on the web about how people have bad experiences even with these.

Generally you get what you pay for. If I were moving in say a 5-10 year timescale I would probably go for a cheaper make. It should last out the 10 years and very few people buy a house on the quality of the boiler.

If I were staying I would probably go for something better quality.

I would go with Vaillant or WB personally, but Glow worm actually aren't bad if you aren't bothered about fancy features and just want a reliable boiler.

Glow Worm is owned by Vaillant. We have one in our new property that’s 3 years old. It’s excellent, very efficient and quiet. I had it serviced recently and the plumber said it’s a very good boiler.
Our new property is nearly 50% bigger than our old one and we are cosier and using less gas.

Thanks everyone. The cost difference between the glow worm and WB is about £1000 but also, with the glow worm we'd get a 10 yr guarantee and only a 5 yr guarantee with the WB so can't decide if it's better to go for the glow worm to get the longer guarantee.

I had a Glow Worm combi boiler installed 15 years ago and there have only been a couple of small issues in that time so yes i have been pleased with it. That is until 2 days ago when it had its annual service and engineer detected some issues which he'll have to return to fix.

So am watching this thread with interest as it looks like it will need replacing in a few years.
