Give me ideas for where to live - London/surrounds affordable, leafy, hipster vibes

Good evening all,

I'm looking for ideas for places to move to later this year with DH and new baby when born.

We currently live in Battersea, budget up to £600k max, want something 2 bed, modern, outside space.

Area is important to us, location is flexible though - DH works in the City and we want to move further out for more affordability.

The type of area we're looking for is somewhere buzzing, with trendy cafes and brunch spots. The type of vibe I have in mind, is a more affordable alternative to to places like De Beauvoir, Hackney Wick, Walthamstow Village, or (much more affordable!) places like Fulham, Dulwich village, Richmond, etc. Hipster cafes, boutique gyms, yoga studios, nice little local restaurants, breweries etc. Safe and community feel. Some places we've looked at like Surbiton/Weybridge do feel a little 'suburban' and not much going on as we're used to. (NO shade to anyone who lives there just us!)

Would be open to a village within 1 hr of London where there is the above trendy 'ex-Londoner' things existing e.g. we were looking at Godalming which does seem to have more trendy / boutiquey places to eat etc. My parents live in Oxfordshire, so not too far in the other direction.

Looked at the likes of Guildford, Reigate, etc, definitely on the cards but still so expensive for what you get. I'm sure there are places that exist that we've never heard of so not considering!

If anywhere rings a bell, let me know!

Please let me know if this nirvana exists!

I like your honesty and optimism.

I too am watching for this place to be outted here. 👀

600k and nice is SE territory. You can get a 2 bed flat for 600 in the nicer parts of SE. So East Dulwich, Greenwich, Blackheart

CharlotteB94 · 24/03/2024 20:03

@Moonshine5 I'm manifesting it!

I loved living in Greenwich, Blackheath Village, and Blackheath Royal Standard/Charlton borders.

Heronwatcher · 24/03/2024 20:28

Have you considered Hither Green, Maze Hill (near Greenwich), Highams Park, Colliers Wood? These areas aren’t overtly trendy but if you scratch beneath the surface you’ll find trendy cafes, green space, good transport links and decent communities.

Axx · 24/03/2024 20:38

I'm no help. I love Battersea Grin

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/03/2024 20:39

West side of Brockley, Honor Oak, Forest Hill, the SE13 bit bordering SE4.

Cambridge is fab and only 50 minutes from Kings X on the train

Sluj · 24/03/2024 20:44

Places ouside of London can have all those things without them having been brought to them by ex Londoners you know 🤣

WhereAreWeNow · 24/03/2024 20:47

Have you looked at Highams Park and Chingford? Easy train ride into Liverpool St. Very close to Walthamstow. Epping Forest on your doorstep. Good schools.

HangingStars · 24/03/2024 20:47

How about Kingston Upon Thames? You’d get a 2 bed terrace with garden for £600k

PinkShore · 24/03/2024 20:48

We moved from a nice SE London location mentioned above to Canterbury. 53 minutes on the train to Kings Cross. Personally I hate the suburbs - I much prefer being in a small city.

We have all the requisite cafes/bars/restaurant/pubs, and a “people eating and drinking on tables out on the street” vibe in the summer which I love and feels quite European. Excellent schools and you’d get a nice house for £600k. I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s trendy here, though. We have Whitstable nearby for more upmarket/posh vibes. All the cool kids from Hackney and Peckham moved to Margate instead.

Godalming is a great place to have a baby. There are some nice independent cafes, delis etc and they do love a yoga studio, but I think it's pretty lacking in hipster vibes.

BingBongBoo86 · 24/03/2024 20:51

Crystal Palace?

Further, Horsham? I’m not sure it’s very hipster though but a great family town.

TicklishHam · 24/03/2024 20:51

Bit further out but with a good train link to London Victoria is Horsham.

The thing is, what you want doesn’t really exist at your budget I think! It woukd be very expensive as it’s what lots of people want.

Anywhere on the Elizabeth line - Berks / Bucks

HannibalHeyes · 24/03/2024 21:40

If you want an apartment, rather than a house, maybe somewhere like West Hampstead. Really lively vibe, lovely local shops, bars, cafes, restaurants. Easy commute to the City. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145849295#/?channel=RES_BUY

If you want a bit more space, maybe somewhere like Surbiton. Still a fast commute to Waterloo, lively, good facilities, near the river. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144510338#/?channel=RES_BUY

Check out this 2 bedroom flat for sale on Rightmove

2 bedroom flat for sale in Mill Lane, West Hampstead, London NW6 for £585,000. Marketed by Alexanders Property Consultants, West Hampstead

Cobham ticks all your boxes but is out of your budget.

sweettooth23 · 25/03/2024 00:41

You could find something pretty decent in Leytonstone for that budget. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144613502

Cobham ticks all your boxes but is out of your budget.

That's useful...

Also, it's a ghastly mixture of Wankpanzers and wannabe wags, so I would avoid like the plague even if you could afford.

Move down the road to Northcote Road off Clapham Junction. It has everything you describe including hipster/trendy, + great family vibe too. I love going for a coffee there and people-watching. Church Street N16 is similar, the other end from the High Street. Blackheath is nice but its a vibe-free zone, same as Forest Hill (aside from having the Museum) and East Dulwich. Hither Green is better, it has a village feel, trendy shops, eateries etc. Just saying, as you mentioned you need a hipster/trendy vibe. Good idea would be to set aside a day to drive around the areas and see for yourself
