Just moved in, Landlord says washing machine pipes are in working order, doesn’t look like it to me?

They look like water pipes so you can connect a sink, washing machine or dishwasher there. Presumably the black one goes to the downpipe.? You will need a plumber to connect a washing machine to this.

Looks right to me, you get a hose with the washing machine that screws into the gold bit and a waste that goes into the black pipe

Probably but you normally have a tap on the inlet pipe, not a screw turn.

I have a screw turn on mine, it's a modern fixing. Taps are old fashioned.

It's more common (in my experience of never having lived in a new property!) to have an appliance tap, what you have there is a simple gate valve. If you take the back nut off the top you'll be able to screw the appliance inlet hose on as it's the same thread, but the end isn't as flat as it is on an appliance tap so it may not seal quite as nicely. It'll probably be ok though.

Very easy for a competent DIYer to change over to an appliance tap for under a fiver. Screwfix or Toolstation or any hardware shop will have them in stock.
