Has anyone created lift up stair storage like this?

We have a very small entryway and would love to do something like the attached photo! Anyone have any idea of how much this would cost and who I'd need to hire to do this?

That's interesting. Is there any reason why you can't have a cupboard under the stairs? I would think that would be simpler and cheaper.

Ooh, no idea but I love it.
(We can't accss under our stairs because the other side of one wall has a radiator and the other is a fireplace.)

Fab hidey hole. Can think of lots of uses (including security)

A friend of mine had something like this. It was fabulous. She had an under-stairs cupboard but there was tons of wasted space above head height so she had these built into the top 1/3 of her stairs which was above head height in her under-stairs cupboard.

I don't know if I've explained that well 😅

Anyway, she got a very good joiner to do it. It looked fabulous and was very functional.

I can't think how this would be safe, weight wise. Stairs take so much weight with people going up and down, how would that stand up to two hefty removal men and a bloody great wardrobe? As a family of heavyweights I would be paranoid it would collapse...

I've never seen that style. On a DIY programme, they made shoe storage drawers in each step like the pic. We've recently renovated and our carpenter could either make it, or fit them if you could buy the components.

My husband made drawers in stairs fir a customer once, he's a joiner.

Personally, I reckon they will end up filled with junk, so I'd definitely go for a pull out drawer option, rather than a lift up one. At least then you can see what's in it.

You get that stairs are hollow underneath when you open them up right ?

There is no reason why you couldn't make it as strong as normal stairs.

For me the issue is always whether the space you get reflects the cost that you pay out to get it done.

Doing an understairs cupboard is fairly easy DIY job but something like that is harder and probably requires a professional joiner for most people. So costs a lot for the space you get. The space under the stairs is often probably much larger than can easily be accessed by a hatch like that. I don't have an understairs cupboard (about to do one) but I know the space will be much better accessed from the side, rather than having to go in head first and then somehow getting inside !

Those drawers look terrifying. All it takes is one little gap accidentally left open and you’ll trip and fall.

Hi, did you end up doing this? Just wondered how it went, im thinking of doing the same

Yes, I have had this done a couple of years ago. It cost £400 and we love it. The company is based in Wolverhampton and is called smart space stair storage. They did a great job in a couple of hours and you can’t tell it is there. We store loads of stuff in there and wouldn’t be without it. I think they only do fairly new houses built in the last 20 years or so.
If you google the name, it will bring them up and you are asked to send them a pic of your stairs. They then get back to you if you are suitable. It may be that they only travel in the midlands area.

That reminds me of a priest hole they have at Harvington Hall in Worcestershire! I don't think the designer is doing them anymore, though, as he died in 1606.

Thank you! Yes we've sorted the company just wasnt sure whether to take the plunge incase it causes issues with the stairs. Thanks so much! I'll pay the deposit now
