Is that reasonable? It's a Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 825 (25kW) combination

We paid about the same for our boiler.

We also got a quote from British Gas; it was about £7,000.

We had a new vaillant boiler installed recently and were about £1300 over and above basic boiler & thermostat (they come separate) cost when I googled it. This included moving pipe work, rebalancing system, taking everything away and setting up thermostat. He was here for a long day, first thing until past dinner time. You can do an online quote just to check what you’ve got is reasonable.

If you don't like the price get a second quote. They can charge what they want, you don't have to go with them!

I googled the model, it's £925. He expects the work to take 1 day.
I'm in Hampshire. I think he's taking the piss, what a shame I really liked him.

Edited

@Alicewinn PM me. I'm in Hampshire, and have the number of an excellent plumber. He moved our boiler to the loft including a new boiler and it wasn't that much. I will give you his number.

PuttingDownRoots · 19/03/2024 12:05

We had to pay for scaffolding when we had our boiler replaced, due to its position.

I think the points that @hannahcolobus and others are made are very valid about all the extra expenses. But I think you’ll only get an idea of whether his charges are competitive if you get a couple of other quotes.

Don’t bother getting a British Gas quote - as PP said, their prices are extortionate. The guy who came out from BG to us was also a real nob, and very sniffy about the quality of any non-BG engineers.

Our heating engineer charges in the region of £350 per day for his labour. We’re doing full-scale renovations at the moment and I know the day rates for my heating engineer/plumber/carpenter/electrician/plasterer. The trades I have found are all really transparent over costs. They’re not necessarily the cheapest in the market but they’re competitive, good quality and very importantly, not misleading over cost.

OP, you say that the engineer has said it’s only one day of work. If that’s the case, I think your quote is a bit steep, even considering the other factors. We had a new boiler relocated to a completely different part of the house, plus loads of work to sort out crappy pipework. That took a full week of work but it only cost £600 more than you’ve been quoted.

I would get comparative quotes. Mind you, I’d also pick the quote from the engineer who is transparent, professional, and communicates clearly, I wouldn’t automatically plump for the cheapest one. I’ve learnt from bitter experience!

A lot of independents are ex. BG engineers.

The problem with independents is they are pretty much a lottery. Some of them are really good and well up on current regs and will make sure they do a professional install with all the correct paperwork.

Others, to put it politely, are more keen on getting in and out ASAP. They won't bother registering the install and probably won't bother keeping up on all the latest regs and certainly won't be back if the thing goes wrong.

The problem is finding a good independent in the absence of any personal knowledge of the job that is being done. For most people this is impossible and just luck of the draw. With someone like BG or Boxt in my experience you are going to get a decent install and regulatory compliance, but you will pay more for that. With independents you take your chances.

Ours was £2300 last month, new boiler in the same spot and one new copper pipe was needed. Took two full days as we had an unknown water pipe hidden in the wall and it started to leak.

Newname927 · 20/03/2024 15:47

£2700+VAT sounds about right.

chesman · 20/03/2024 20:30

I've had 2 quotes so far, one has come in at £3400 with 8 year guarantee, the other £3850 with 10 year guarantee - both were for the same boiler model and both were swap outs in same location. One also quoted a boiler installation to a different location (approx. 12 feet from current) and that came in at £5180. I'm awaiting a 3rd quote before deciding how to proceed.

Evensong · 20/03/2024 21:11

In the South West here and we had that exact same boiler fitted and it cost exactly that.

Two men worked incredibly hard for a day and a half. I can agree with the poster who said the boiler is only a small part of the kit. There were pipes, control panels, outlet flues and pipes galore. They needed tons of kit for drilling through walls and all sorts. The boiler was only one piece of the job.

OneFrenchEgg · 20/03/2024 21:25

We are paying just under £7k to change to a combo from gravity fed.

donothing · 20/03/2024 22:26

The problem is that there is a shortage of plumbers who install boilers in the IK. He will always be in demand. So you will be paying a bit of a premium for that reason - he can probably pick and choose what jobs he does, so will always go for the highest paying jobs.

Did you get three quotes? If not, you should. Then you will know what the fair market price is for your area

GettingStuffed · 21/03/2024 00:14

We paid £3000 for my mils house. It took a week due to things going wrong.
