750 square feet - 5 people

Currently going through a divorce and toying with the idea of buying a 750 square feet house for 5 of us (1 adult, 4 children aged 7-13). The plan would be 2 kids share biggest bedroom & other 2 a room each and I’ll sleep on sofa/in trundle bed in kids room. Downstairs in just a living room and separate kitchen diner.

pros - I can afford it without stretching myself financially, close to school, good location.

obvious cons - very small!

Has anyone got any experience / has made this work? I would hope it wouldn’t be forever, maybe 2-3 years until I find my feet.

Thanks for reading

How is that even possible in rented accommodation?

The OP is looking at this property to buy.

It's not perfect but it will make do, although the adjustment might be difficult for the older children.

I would put the little one in with me in the medium bedroom.

Having enough money and it working for schools/work is far more important to me than bigger rooms.

I would go for it. We are 2 adults me and DH, and 2 children 12DS and 8DS so 4 altogether in a 2 bed house. We have a big living/dining,small kitchen a really big bedroom room and a small bedroom. The only thing that makes it tough is clutter and not enough storage to suit the house layout. We can’t move as my husband became very ill so 1 wage, so we had to make it our forever home (never intended), and I think we are lucky to not have to rent as I regularly have friends who due to the popularity of where we live are forced out of their rented houses by ever increasing pricing. But it works with reduced stuff, a dehumidifier for drying clothes, boys in the big room so a big rug between beds (although I’ve read on here about suggestions of long curtains which I might try),a sofa bed in the living room for guests and a garden table to get people outside. I think your plan shows opening out direct to garden and that will help reduce the feeling of small! I would definitely keep small room for you as the only thing I miss is head space for me (I often have to sleep on sofa bed due to caring stuff) It might be smaller but you can keep up current school routines, and will feel better I suspect than you have for a long time so the atmosphere will feel right . Good luck

Thank you so much for your post, much appreciated. I’ve decided I’m going to go for it but ex is delaying the family house sale so I’m sure the house will be gone by the time everything is sorted out. Hopefully something similar and affordable comes up.

I’m sure we’ll be ok and better than the situation we’re currently in.

All the best with it, OP. It will give you some security at least.

I hope you manage to get things sorted in time.
