House Not Selling - Required for Care

LostInTheSystem101 · 14/03/2024 12:52

Hello!

We are trying to sell my Grandmother's house. It has been on the market for 8 months, currently with the second agent.

Opening price was £375k, as suggested by the EA. Now offers over £285k.

We are aware it needs modernising, of course, but it is liveable, and soundly built. Garage, driveway, front and back gardens, 15 minute walk from the beach.

Viewings not even in double figures I don't think since it went on, no offers.

My Grandmother has been in a dementia care home since March 2023, has run out of cash, and needs the house sale to pay for her continuing care (she currently owes over £40k). We have contacted the local authority to assist with deferred payments. However, we still need the house to sell!

Any advice?

6 months and one week after the thread began, and it was already for sale for 8 months before that ?

Phew indeed !

how is she, as you mentioned deterioration and potentially the need to move homes ?

I know.. it has been a journey! I wish the estate agents had just priced it realistically in the first place, it would have sold far quicker then. Still, it's done now.

Thank you for asking. She has been ok, less aggression, her medication has been increased (if she'll take it), she has been prescribed her Alzheimer's meds in liquid form so that they can be added toa drink, she's not so good at eating now. They also discovered a urine infection, which likely had an impact on her, so hopefully she's getting enough of those into her to help. She's finger eating, and clenches food (like a baby/toddler when they're discovering food), so not much makes it to her mouth.

It's such a cruel illness. Some of the residents in the home are so happy, in their world, wandering around, singing and cleaning. Some are just sat, like nan, with the most pained and vacant expressions. I realised at the weekend that I actually lost my nan a while ago, she doesn't even look like her now. She has no dignity, no joy. We try and engage her and sometimes we're rewarded with a smile which is worth so much (and she is enjoying a strawberry gin regularly now!)

Just a brief update, Nan passed peacefully at 2am Thursday morning. She had been very happy on Wednesday, and had obviously decided to let go.

No more torture for her. Rest in peace Nan.

Thank you for your support and advice x

@LostInTheSystem101 I am sorry for your loss.

It is a dreadful disease and you have been through an awful time with selling the house as well. I hope 2025 is kind to you and your family.

HoundsOfHelfire · 22/12/2024 08:33

So sorry to hear that Nan passed away. You’ll have many fond memories of her I’m sure

OccasionalHope · 22/12/2024 09:26

Sorry for your loss and glad she had a happy final day.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/12/2024 11:24

Aw I am sorry, your sad update brought a tear to my eye - the ' strawberry gin ' Nan.

Did she stay in the original home - as once there was concern they may ask her to leave due to her deterioration ?

Aw bless you.

Yes she did, thankfully. They changed her medication and she was on one with a mild sedative type effect, so she was much calmer.
She was on full bed-rest for the last 3 or 4 weeks of her life. We are pleased she passed there and not in a hospital. She wasn't on her own, either, she had a carer with her, which is comforting

Sorry for your loss, @LostInTheSystem101, and that the last few months with your Nan were accompanied by the concern over the care debt and house sale. 💐

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/12/2024 14:58

I am so relieved and pleased she stayed in that home, moving would have been so disruptive to her.

stayathomegardener · 22/12/2024 16:44

When it does sell perhaps look into an index linked care annuity.

We paid £140k for Mums which added to her pension pays her similar care home fees completely.

Oh no I am so sorry to read that.

Rubbish wifi didn't fully load the thread. Flowers

I'm sorry for your loss. And glad that the house sold, so you had that worry off your shoulders.

So sorry for your loss but she is at peace now. Thanks for updating us. X

Thank you all, very much.

It was a stressful journey but we are pleased she was settled and in a lovely, caring environment.

I walked by her old house yesterday, it's being worked on but looks lovely. She'd be proud of what they've done!
