Nottingham : Which area is perfect for family and good for primary schools?

Hello everyone,

My partner and I, along with our 2.5-year-old toddler and plans for more children in the future, are currently residing in the beautiful area of Mapperley Park in Nottingham. However, we've realized that there aren't any "outstanding" schools nearby. As much as we adore living in a hilly, leafy neighborhood, we recognize the importance of living in an area with excellent schools. Currently, our child attends Woodthorpe Nursery and thoroughly enjoys it.

My main query revolves around identifying family-friendly and safe areas in Nottingham. We're seeking neighborhoods with plenty of parks and activities for children, such as indoor and outdoor play areas, as well as clubs for swimming, football, basketball, etc. I feel it's crucial to establish connections with other parents and make friends who have children of a similar age so we can share experiences and meet up regularly.

Could you kindly suggest areas where we could purchase homes within the range of £200K-£250K? We're looking for a property with two main bedrooms and an additional office space, and we're confident in our ability to afford it.
We are drawn to a slower-paced lifestyle, particularly in suburban areas, and we have a fondness for hilly views, which we often enjoy from Mapperley Drive or Gedling. However, we're unsure if these areas offer great schools. I've heard that West Bridgford is renowned for its schools. Would it be feasible to find a suitable house within our budget in this area?

We would greatly appreciate your insights and recommendations regarding both houses and areas suitable for families. Given our love for walks, it's important to us that we feel safe taking our child outdoors.

Overall, do you believe Nottingham is a suitable place for families?
We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for your time :)

Your budget is an issue. The easy fit is just move to Woodthorpe however you won't get a house for that amount of the money in Woodthorpe. Try looking at Wilford (but check the catchment area first), Ruddington or Bingham.

According to you how much should we estimate/ upgrade our budget for area like woodthorpe, mapperly park or westbrideford in general?

Probably double your budget at least.

DuckBee · 14/03/2024 13:25

A budget option is Lady Bay but that’s in the city boundary but gives you access to wb

Toddlerteaplease · 14/03/2024 13:44

Stay in Mapperly Park, if you love it there. It is one of the better areas. As a PP said. I wouldn't worry too much about Ofsted and certainly wouldn't move because of it. Things change quickly. Go for a school that you like.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/03/2024 13:45

I live in Lenton and my tiny house is probably worth about £200k now. So I think you'll struggle for your budget.

No, I am content with finding good primary schools and nurseries. I have visited seven nurseries, and I particularly liked the one that had a "good" rating.
While there are many nurseries near our house, I did not find them suitable. Therefore, we have to travel a bit further to drop him off at the nursery we preferred. However, it is worth the extra effort.
Now, as we are looking to buy a house, I am seeking a location with either good or great schools, depending on the feedback from parents whose children attend those schools, and a sense of community, which I feel is lacking here. As mentioned in my previous post, we are drawn to the leafy and hilly aspects of Mapperley Park. However, when we were searching for a nursery, we found that the nearby options did not meet our criteria. I don't have an issue with a nursery having a "good" rating.
This conversation seems to have shifted focus. Essentially, I was looking for places where we can get value for our money and a family-friendly lifestyle.

This is likely because your original post only specifically mentions ‘outstanding’ schools and does give the impression that ‘good’ schools aren’t acceptable. So it’s good for you to clear that up for readers.

I'd be looking at the Chetwynd Spencer Academy which is Toton / Stapleford / Attenborough. Something like this is in budget https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/136356089#/?channel=RES_BUY

You need to look closely at catchment areas, for Nottinghamshire rather than City I'd be looking here https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/search-for-a-school and cross referencing.

Check out this 3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale on Rightmove

3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale in Norfolk Avenue, Toton, NG9 for £240,000. Marketed by Robert Ellis, Long Eaton

I would definitely recommend Woodthorpe - there are good and outstanding primary schools nearby and there's plenty going on for young families, as well as having nice parks. If you could increase your budget to 300, that would get you a decent house in the area that might need a bit of TLC.

GoingOnHol · 14/03/2024 20:23

Further out Sandiacre & long Eaton you’d get a 3 bed semi for your budget & ‘good’ rated schools from primary to secondary. And long Eaton train station with direct to Manchester I think, change in notts or derby for Edinburgh

TheLightOfEarlyMorning · 14/03/2024 20:28

If you've found a place in Nottingham that you like, then stay.... There are some rough areas there - especially if your budget isn't high...

Wilford & Wilford village are supposedly in catchment for WB comp but highly unlikely to actually get in

I would be very cautious at considering only outstanding schools as previous posters have said.
I live in neighbouring Derbyshire. There is a secondary school close to me that was rated outstanding for around 15+ years. Because of this they had no inspection visits for over 12 years. Around 18 months ago they were finally inspected and the report was awful. They were actually graded as inadequate. All sorts of issues. The parents were losing their minds as they had spent a 30% premium on their houses - being in the catchment bumped up prices.
You cannot rely on an ofsted report which may be years out of date. You need to do the work yourself. Research schools, go and visit, speak to parents and pupils, look at their social media pages etc.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 16/03/2024 22:52

Bramcote Hiils schools are very good and so is Fernwood in Wollaton.

WGACA · 16/03/2024 23:09

I would look at Beeston or Sherwood. Hayden is a good school in Sherwood and Trent Vale/The Lanes both great in Beeston.

But no good state schools in catchment…

Banks Road in Toton also good.

JenniferandJuniper · 16/03/2024 23:45

Wollaton is a nice area and in Nottinghamshire Nuthall is lovely.

George Spencer?
We almost moved to stapleford but I'm glad.now that we didn't

Bramcote Hiils schools are very good and so is Fernwood in Wollaton.

Be careful because Bramcote and Wollaton are close to some very, very bad areas. Very bad. And easy to get pulled into one due to house prices.

In Nottingham, one street can be good and the next bad.

RosaSkyes · 17/03/2024 15:47

@BobbysSox E in D??

@BobbysSox E in D??

Yep, that's the one! It has gone back to good now in fairness but the issues picked up haven't particularly been addressed from what I gather from friends with children there.

hedgehoggle · 17/03/2024 16:09

Beeston - but be aware it's very student-y. You'd probably be looking at an ex-council house on your budget, maybe around Lenton Abbey.

For a curveball - have you considered around Southwell?

Sherwood is probably beyond your price range and close to some rougher areas, so what you could afford there I'd assume wouldn't be great.

Bestwood village? Linby, Papplewick? (Not sure about price on the last two)

RosaSkyes · 17/03/2024 16:21

@BobbysSox where I grew up! The houses are such a premium too

BobbysSox · 17/03/2024 16:32

@RosaSkyes it's a lovely village, but so expensive!! I can understand why people that moved there to get into the school were so upset.

Southwell is beautiful and has good schools but I’d be very surprised if they found somewhere for 200k.

One of the schools I was considering for my DD was outstanding and just before the summer it was rated requires improvement. When a school is rated outstanding it doesn’t need inspection for (I think) 10 years so I wouldn’t base your decision on that. There’s loads of lovely villages around Nottingham you can consider. I’d plot some names into Rightmove and see what pops up.

hedgehoggle · 17/03/2024 22:27

There are definitely some in Southwell, but I agree you'd need to get lucky. I looked at a bit of a fixer upper for 180k a couple years ago, but it was Listed and I couldn't be bothered with the faff ..
