Wires outside house

Does anyone know who owns these black wires that are attached to my house as circled in blue? I assume BT? They run from the wooden pole on the pavement, then attached to my house etc, one of the wires to the right of property dangles down to the driveway.

Its been there since I bought the place over 20 years ago, never gave it a second thought but now contemplating works to the front of the house and ideally like these wires removed as they are rather unsightly but not sure who to contact about or know if that’s even possible? Thanks

No help - but confused by ‘sensitive content’?????

DatingDinosaur · 10/03/2024 00:27

If the wires are all coming from the telegraph pole, I think my first port of call would be to contact BT. They'll be able to test the wires and tell you which ones are theirs, active or live. Then take it from there. If they own all the wires they'll be able to remove the obsolete ones.

Edit: there will probably be a fee for this.

I'm also getting "sensitive content" but if you click on it anyway, the image shows.

Thank you. Not sure why it’s marked as sensitive, it’s late and I probably clicked on the wrong button by mistake.

Both my phone line and my electricity get to my house through overhead cables. Certainly for electricity cables, if you're doing work near them you have to arrange to either have them protected or to have the power turned off.

They will belong to Openreach (and/or any other operator who may be sharing their infrastructure but unlikely if they have been there as long as you say).
Ask for a survey but I should imagine there could possibly be a fee.
If you don't want overhead wires then be prepared for them to offer a different solution (at your cost).
If some of them belong to other properties (why would you have multiple lines?) then they may be able to move them.

rwalker · 10/03/2024 11:45

There definitely telephone wires
do you currently have a working line

cost a fair bit to have them move

but also they might not be able to moved they have to be a minimum height over the rd so you can’t fix them lower down
and they don’t fix on to facia boards now incase they aren’t structurally strong enough

if there dead cut them down and rode them to telegraph pole and deny all knowledge or they will bill you

Creamegg18 · 10/03/2024 21:55

Thanks all. My telephone line is with Virgin Media - never had BT. Just don’t want it still attached to my property if wires are redundant - I guess I have to contact OpenReach then. If I replace my facia board, do I need to reattach the wires?

Your Virgin line likely uses the BT infrastructure.
The loose cable... Is there a loose end cutoff and unterminated? Or does it terminate somewhere but is flapping against the house?
Picture might be helpful.

Cheers.

Having a loop in a cable entering the house is really important to stop water running down the cable into the masonry!

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 11/03/2024 00:32

Is there any tag/label on the post itself mentioning who owns / used to own it?

DatingDinosaur · 11/03/2024 18:21

"If I replace my facia board, do I need to reattach the wires?"

If you're replacing the facias yourself then yes unless you know for certain they're not live and supplying your services. If you don't reattach (eg. because they're dead wires they'll be left dangling down the pole - might be a public safety issue there that you will be liable for.

If a company is replacing your facias then they will re-attach in the same place as standard practice. (I've just had this done and they told me they're legally obligated to do this).

Honestly, get in touch with BT or Openreach or whoever and ask their advice.
