what to do with greenhouse question

Putting our old family home on market soon, and currently clearing it and getting it ready for sale. Large garden. There is a glasshouse which is in a pretty poor state of repair. The storms this winter have been hard on it, there are a few broken panes. It is about 30 years old, the structure is still okay. Just want to know how appealing/offputting it would be to buyers. Clearly the broken panes need to be removed, but that just makes it even worse and prone to more storm damage, if you know what I mean.

Should I repair and make it good, or remove all glass and leave the frame, or have it dismantled completely? Would you be put off by this? The house itself needs a lot of work so not sure how buyers would feel about also having the skeleton of a greenhouse to deal with too - or perhaps people like the idea of one?

I'd imagine people would be interested in a large garden with a family home, and a greenhouse is normal building in one.
Probably best to remove it, leaving the base, then buyers can get their own.

Thanks, I am leaning towards removing it tbh. Just interested if anyone reading this works in estate agency etc - how do buyers feel about this kind of thing?

Greenhouses are super expensive now. Our new house came with a knackered greenhouse and it's my favourite thing! £20 for a couple of new panes and you're away.

I would leave it, then if they don't want it they are easy enough to get rid of?

Also if you take it down, what would you put in it's place? Could be expensive to make good.

If it's only a couple of broken panes, I'd replace those and leave it standing. If the property a large garden, I think a greenhouse would be a plus point.

Chasingsquirrels · 09/03/2024 10:04

I've picked up 2 greenhouses (now house my hens) and a lean-to greenhouse on Facebook Marketplace for free.

If you want to get new panes it would be worth keeping an eye out for free ones.

If you are getting rid then put it up for free and someone is likely to take it away.

Crikey - don't remove it as a previous poster said! If it's structurally sound and just has a few broken lanes that would be an awful waste.

Could you just tidy/clean it up and remove any obviously dangerous bits of glass.

AInightingale · 09/03/2024 10:10

I'd be left with a very unsightly square of breezeblocks on the grass if I had it removed!

Hard to know what to do because removing the broken panes makes it prone to even more damage, we have had vicious winds here. I might just have all the glass removed so it is at least safe - be very offputting to buyer with children.

I've just realised you said the house itself needs a lot of work. In that case I don't think dealing with a dilapidated garden structure as well would make much difference.

Pootles34 · 09/03/2024 10:17

Panes are only about £10 each, I would fix them personally.

Chasingsquirrels · 09/03/2024 10:18

Remove the panes, keep the sound ones in a safe place for reuse.
Keep your eye out on Facebook Marketplace for free panes - if you find enough to fully repair then do so.

Agree with others that if the house is a renovation project the greenhouse in the garden isn't going to make any difference.

I doubt it would put anyone off as it is so I would leave it. Decades ago my father took out the panes of a dilapidated greenhouse and built a shed using the remaining structure. It's still standing. Potential buyers will have their own ideas, or they may be gardeners and be happy to replace a few panes of glass.

I’d leave it as it is. If someone wants it they’ll repair it, if the6 don’t they’ll offer it on FB. Personally I’d be delighted to find a repairable greenhouse.
