niche or shelf in small shower?

Hi all,
I am in middle of refurbishing two bathroom, one has small shower area (76x90 cm).
due to restrictions, shower can only go on 76 cm. we are thinking to install concealed shower ( hansgrohe with head & hand shower ).

Wondering is it a good idea to have niche in high limescale area? also bathrooms dont have windows so thinking the niche will be place where we have to keep on top of cleaning/mould

Online I saw bathroom shelfs -that can be tiled too. Have anyone used those?

Or any better option to store shampoo soap in shower area?

Any thoughts of this??

That’s quite a small shower. You need the widest door you can get! Fully opening. You could use shower panels. Have you looked at these? I’m not a fan but they are really getting much better.

I wanted a niche, but the walls weren't deep enough in the end to accommodate one, so I got something like this instead - https://victoriaplum.com/browse/all-bathroom-furniture?csi=SHCD07&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA6KWvBhAREiwAFPZM7iEIemUR1KlB2p8jQe4rgbnp85bfGlBItxNbl5htJqeaGizAn9oixBoCVCYQAvD_BwE

Limescale is a pain though, but I've discovered the sonic scrubber works wonders.

Get a water softener.

I don’t see what’s wrong with a vanity unit OP. Cupboards under are very useful. Better than a hole in a tiled wall with a door!

Your niche needs to be taller than you think. Most bottles can't stand in one of ours but still very happy with it (limescale area)

I thought vanity might not last long ! so chosen without vanity!

There is a long ledge in front of basin. It will have a worktop. Tenants can store stuff in that...

going to long lasting fittings so that i dont have to replace/fix stuff!

Yes, agree with - storage above toilet might be tricky!!

ps: current state of bathroom!

@skuml As this property will be tenanted, don’t use suction! They won’t stay in place. We have drilled in glass shelves in some bathrooms and a niche in others. For tenants, a niche won’t break. A shelf can be broken or fall off. Most will need screwing through the tiles. A decent tenant will look after a niche.

I would ditch the storage above the loo. Just don’t add doors and cupboards which are difficult to construct. Just tile it and have a shelf. Tenants won’t care.

Above the sink, get a mirrored cabinet. Mine store shampoo, toothpaste etc. Ample storage. Do have a heated towel rail if you have space.

I second not having storage above the loo. Our last house had it, and the number of times I had to do a dramatic catch to avoid things ending up in the loo- we took it down in the end.

Yes, it is small... 76x90. somehow we couldn't make it bigger in the space !

still researching shower door.

bathroom specialist recommended us to order on after tiling is done (when I know exact size)

At the moment, we are not dividing long living room into another bedroom ... Now, it is going to one bedroom flat with , a bathroom and another shower room ! and separate kitchen! Not sure how much it will add to our property value!

we have decided to go with a shower curtain as with the tiny space the only option would have been sliding or concertina doors. both akward to clean.

Stainless steel niches are great.

Make sure that all the shower area is tanked with wedi board.

Another question regarding Bathroom lights:

Planning just to have custom cut mirror above basin.
What is best way to get good light on face? Thinking should I install 2-3 spot light above the mirror too (in Addition to ceiling spot lights).

In shower room, Its quite small - instead of spot lights, I am thinking to just go regular bathroom light ( photo attached) and a spot light in shower area.

My old spot lights keep coming coming out of ceiling a bit ... Any suggestion for good spot light? should I go for integrated light?

We have a mirror with built in lighting. Absolute waste of time. We had LED spotlights put in the bathroom. It's so bright in there we don't need any other lighting.

Iamnotawinp · 10/03/2024 10:26

I have a couple of tiles niches in the shower.

I find with the right tiles and a reasonable cleaning schedule there haven’t been any problems.

However, some tradesmen hate doing them as they are fiddly and take extra time tiling, so will cost more.

So first off you need a realistic quote that won’t get changed because of the ‘extra’ work.
