A bathroom that won’t date quickly

Tomorrowtomorrow77 · 03/03/2024 21:38

I love all the current bathroom trends… white or grey… marbles… gold taps and trimmings BUT I won’t be able to afford to redo my en-suite for a few years and so I want it to still look good in the future. Where can I find and what does a classic, ageless en-suite look like? I’ve spent hours trawling the internet and I’m still no further forward! Any advice or photos?

Following.

I’d find some 4/5* hotel bathrooms and look at them. The ones that don’t get refurbed often but still don’t look dated because they’re just nicely
done.

(About to paint my old bathroom baby pink and green. Don’t think I would if I was paying more than the cost of paint though!!)

My bathroom has turquoise moroccan tiling, it won’t date because it was never in fashion but is a colour I love and the tiles were good quality and added something to a plain white suite.

I got them from
https://yourtiles.com/wall-tiles/moroccan-tiles who have a stunning range of tiles and you can order samples from eBay or their website.

Personally I think the key is to keep things like gray to the painted walls so you can change it easily in future. Going for quality tiles that you love also makes the bathroom.

taps can be changed so go with gold if you like it but buy good quality ones so they last.

Gold and marble was in in the 70s.

LeavesOnTrees · 03/03/2024 22:47

What's the period of your house? Something that matches that won't go out of fashion as it's in keeping with the original style.

@LeavesOnTrees it is 13 years old.

Gold tends to lose its shine over time so I would avoid. Put our shower room in 16 years ago - plain grey large tiles contrasted with same tile but embossed. It still looks good and hasn't dated. So I would say keep it simple, buy the best quality you can afford, especially fittings, buy a magazine for inspiration and suppliers.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 03/03/2024 22:55

Keep it simple, plain tiles that are not too small or big. Avoid patterns imbedded in tiles.
Look up contemporary designs. Ensure it fits in the rest of the house/apartment etc

LeavesOnTrees · 03/03/2024 22:59

Ok so something fairly modern.
I'd go large, sandy / stone effect tiles, maybe with a contrasting relief effect tile in a small area / band
Good quality.
Check out Porcelanosa for instance.

Keep the fittings brushed metal, avoid the gold and brass trend. Avoid marble.

just do something you love. You will probably still love in 10 or 20 years time and won't mind if it is dated.

candgen625 · 03/03/2024 23:05

Just have what you like. Trust your own taste. If it "dates" so what you like it

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 03/03/2024 23:06

Current trends seem to be gold or black taps with long metro tiles in herringbone pattern.

I think chrome taps are timeless. They are also easy to clean and there are lots to choose from. Plus, you can easily find decent ones by good brands like hansgrohe etc.

Try and go for high quality lasting brands for taps and sink/ bath. Grohe, Hansgrohe, Villeroy and Boch, Laufen, Duravit and the like.

Tiles are harder to choose as they determine the overall look. I agree with a poster above to go for high quality.

We went for large rectangular tiles in a neutral beige/ light greenish colour. The size minimised the need for grout. We also tiled floor to ceiling, it just looks much better than half tiled. We also chose the same tile in Matt and square for the floor. Much easier to pick than going for a completely different tile.

Another vote for just do what you love. Who cares if it dates, would rather that than be bored of it from day one. En suites are made to show off your personality. * disclaimer proud owner of green and marble tiles, brass taps and a few black bits too to really ensure it dates quickly 🤣

Crispynoodle · 03/03/2024 23:44

I've just redecorated mine. 17 years ago we tiled half way up the wall with large rectangular white tiles. I've since painted the rest of the wall every colour under the sun it never dates! Lately we've installed new bath, new shower and new vanity but kept the tiles with chrome taps etc. the wall is painted farrow and ball Peignoir a soft mauve and it looks up to date

Mossstitch · 04/03/2024 00:24

I think the black taps that are 'in' at the moment will date quickly. ( remember a relative in the 90s spending a small fortune on gold taps with burgundy suite😬 now that dated quickly!). My house was gutted about 13 years ago, floors all stripped floorboards, doors oak, slate look tiles on main bathroom floor, white walls everywhere and white metro tiles. Bit basic/boring probably but everybody comments on how nice it is when they come in and ask if it's all just been done, still looks fresh and not dated. Personality can be injected with accessories which are easier to change if you get bored with them.

Northernsouloldies · 04/03/2024 01:13

This was in the 80s,I remember a customer coming in with gold dolphin taps wanting gold dolphin tiles, those taps were the most hideous thing I've ever seen.

And it’s back! I do love the look though….

Thank you. I think I am feeling the same. I can change accessories as the years pass. As long as I get good quality tiles I think that will be the key.

We have large 90x90cm tiles. Sandstone on walls, dark grey on floor. Walk in shower, floating high quality sink with built in drawer and floating toilet. All grohe, laufen pro so decent quality. Rain shower.

I think it still looks modern and fresh 5 years on. It’s not dated at all. You can add accessories in any colour but ours are simple and a few plants only.

Unless it needs something I have no plans on changing for at least 20 years. Our other bathrooms haven’t been renovated, they are really dated, but still as new condition when old owners did in the 1970s.

Tatonka · 04/03/2024 06:47

Keep it white and silver tapware. These bathrooms don't age (or haven't in the past 20 or so years)

PansyOatZebra · 04/03/2024 08:34

I think a white suite with chrome taps etc. won’t age. For tiles I’d always go for a blueish colour I think. Maybe search timeless bathrooms on Pinterest.

JJathome · 04/03/2024 08:46

Just do what you like op. Don’t go for fashion. It’s always a poor decision.

mine is large coppery bronze tiles with white loo, shower bath, it’s gorgeous in my opinion obvs, and guests always comment on it as it’s different.

it was never in fashion as such, so will never go out.

Rowena191 · 04/03/2024 09:23

Make sure everything is water resistant, eg tiles on floor not carpet, glass shower screen not shower curtain, frosted glass windows not roller blind. We had a sink that was set into an ordinary bedroom cupboard unit and within 5 years the water had got into the MDF and it had started swelling and getting misshapen. If you choose water resistant stuff to start with you'll have to do a lot less replacing as you go on.

happyhippo24 · 04/03/2024 09:29

People are saying go for what you like, not what’s in fashion but I don’t know how helpful that is because if you’re currently researching for a bathroom it’s going to be all the ‘on trend’ stuff you’re seeing and liking anyway. You just need to like it enough to not hate it when it’s not the in thing anymore though.
