Get an induction job with built in extractor. Game changer.

In terms of efficiency the most important thing is that it has external ducting. The expensive room recirculating units are just a waste of money. Ask me how I know :( Shouldn't be allowed to sell them..

So they do remove smells a little, as long as you keep cleaning/replacing the filters, but not very well. The bigger issue is that they don't remove the steam, just push it around the room causing condensation.
We gave up on the one we put in my nephews apartment and paid to have one put in with ducting to an external wall vent. The difference was night and day. No smells at all after cooking and no condensation or steamed up windows.
The recirculation ones might be ok if you are prepared to open windows (who wants to do that in winter). His apartment was open plan and didn't actually have a kitchen window so when cooking a Sunday dinner particularly, by the time it was ready to serve all the windows downstairs were condensed. Now absolutely nothing.

We've got a Siemens hob with down draft extractor (expensive) and it works really well. As with all these things it's a bit noisy but we are happy with it and it looks v sleek

Forgot to say all parts are dishwasher proof so no need for filers at all
