How many fire alarms?

Hello, can I ask how many fire alarms you have in your house and where? The house we’ve moved into has 9 just for a 4 bed which seems like an awful lot to me. They’ve all been disabled - I can only think because having so many would mean one going off accidentally a lot - so need to decide which ones to replace

Mains smoke alarm in every room (except bathrooms) and each landing - had to have them installed when we had our loft converted. They’re incredibly loud and DH is always setting them off by burning toast etc Angry but better safe than sorry I guess!

I have one in every room besides bathrooms and every hallway and landing area.

stargazer02 · 01/03/2024 10:12

One landing plus one in every room downstairs. In fact the biggest room, just off the kitchen, has 2 (plus a carbon monoxide alarm)

In Scotland here, so have to comply with latest Regs. . So, one on each floor in hallway, one in each room with fireplace/ gas fire, along with carbon monoxide detectors , plus heat detector in the kitchen and we put one in the utility.
All linked, so if one goes off, they all go off. So 4 smoke alarms , 2 heat alarms and 3 CO detectors - 3 bed house.

We have two in a 3-bed. A heat detector in kitchen and smoke alarm on landing

CasperGutman · 01/03/2024 11:13

We have smoke detectors in the hallway, on the landing and in the utility room (which is accessed through the kitchen and leads to a shower room). The kitchen itself has a heat detector.

I'm in a 1 bed house but like pp in Scotland so as per our regs I have a smoke alarm in the hall, one in the living room, a heat detector in the kitchen & a carbon monoxide alarm

wineymummy · 01/03/2024 11:16

If you have a loft conversion without fire doors, they are in each habitable room for a reason and should be made to work again. They're loud and annoying, but could save a life one day.
If you're on two floors only and each bedroom has the option to safely escape from a window if necessary, you only need them in a hallway/landing on each level, plus in the kitchen. I'd still keep them all rather than get rid though.

We have 6 smoke alarms in a 3 bed house and 2 carbon monoxide detectors.

ClematisBlue49 · 01/03/2024 12:24

I'm renovating a small bungalow and have had to have them fitted in every room, along with solid doors on all rooms (all but two of which will never be closed). Completely OTT in my view, but can't get the works signed off without doing it.

Regs aren't being adhered to. We moved house last year, put all necessary smoke/heat/CO alarms in purely for selling. When we moved into our new house there was only 1 smoke in the hall and 1 CO beside the boiler. I contacted my solicitor and was told it isn't being enforced 😡

Fluffyc1ouds · 01/03/2024 12:37

We have 4 in a 2 bed flat. One on the stairwell, one on the landing, one in the main bedroom and one in the kitchen. Plus carbon monoxide alarms in the living room and second bedroom.

housethatbuiltme · 01/03/2024 12:58

We have one at bottom of stairs, one at top of stairs, C02 in living room (we fitted when moving in), C02 in kitchen next to boiler (new to comply with recent regs) and 1 in our bedroom (DH paranoid after a plug melted in the socket).

That's more than required. They say 10% of the countries houses don't even have one smoke alarm which seems nuts (I mean you can even get them fitted for free but they aren't crazy expensive anyway).

Camelliugh · 01/03/2024 13:13

If you google your local council, then look up fire alarm service a lot of fire departments now come and assess the fire safety of your home for free and will make recommendations. I’d go that op.

LIZS · 01/03/2024 13:24

3 , one on each floor wired together.

Is that not just typical? Oh well, it was a diy job, so I am happy enough that I am covered.

Cinnamonandclove · 01/03/2024 15:40

Thanks - this is interesting and some useful advice. May we will just replace them all then. We only had 2 in our last place but it was a fair bit smaller.

We have them in every room in our four bed house, including the utility room, garage and landings. We also have three carbon monoxide detectors. The more the merrier, I say. I have absolutely no intention of dying in a house fire.

BoschBashBish · 01/03/2024 18:27

I have one on each landing and the downstairs hallway - which is what the building regs required when loft was done in 2008. All doors leading onto the escape route are firedoors.
