Who comes up with designs like these?!

Before people jump me, I know that open plan living room/kitchens are quite popular at the moment. I like the look of some of them but I personally prefer to have a separate kitchen.

Today, I came across this property and I just don’t understand it. Why would someone want to sit on their sofa and face the kitchen? From the other pictures, it doesn’t even seem like there’s much room to try and move things around. Are these properties easier/cheaper to build? Is there anyone here that would actually like this set up? I genuinely have so many questions.

As if this wasn’t ridiculous enough, the price is £1700 PCM and it’s a one bedroom flat….

That's funny and depressing all at the same time

That’s awful - not quite on a par with Rental Opportunity of the Week but not far off.

Even with “all bills included” (and it’s never all of them), that’s over £18k a year before you’ve bought so much as a packet of instant noodles or a tube fare. Realistically it’s too small for a couple, so what, easily 50% of a young profs take home? And this is why people are in shared houses into their 30s and 40s.

Disgusting.

I agree with you. I’ve actually seen some studio flats that are done quite nicely and are very spacious.

I also don’t understand how the Landlord is charging £1700 for this place. Crazy

Because its self contained. Because of that they can call that a flat, even though its a glorified bedsit/studio.

would it not have made more sense to have the kitchen as 1 long row of cabinet along where the sofa is and what is the kitchen be a living room?

Then you could have the sofa against the bedroom wall and a tv against the bathroom wall instead staring at the thrilling drama of the dripping sink.

The price also blows my mind... might be because I'm a northerner but I pay £550 a month (so 1/3rd of that price) for a 115 square meter 3 bed Victorian terrace house.

PegasusReturns · 29/02/2024 09:56

No one particularly chooses to live like that - they choose the best of a series of overpriced, cramped options to suit their budget.

and many many people would prefer to live in a place like that than in a flat share.

I don’t really understand your question about why it’s designed like this? It’s a two room/one bed flat. If you have a building with 12 rooms you can have four, two-beds, or six one-beds. It’s far more profitable to have the latter, since the difference between price for a one bed and two bed is often not vast.

Welcome to London OP! There are more people looking for places to live then there are properties on the market- people will be queuing up to bite the landlord's hand off for a chance to live there.

Exactly. I've seen worse.

I’ve lived in SW London all my life, I’m not new here😆 doesn’t seem like people are queuing to bite the LL’s hand judging by the length of time the property has been listed.

@Estellaa of course there’s worse properties about! That doesn’t mean this layout didn’t raise questions as to why people design properties this way

Probably because there is nowhere else for it and they wanted a sofa

@Pfpppl Ha! At least you wouldn't have to move from the sofa to get a beer out of the fridge!

That made me chuckle 😂
Very true!

V normal, esp if city living. Not everyone has the Tele stuck in front of the sofa.
