Combining utility room with pantry?

I know it’s not the ideal scenario as laundry with food items is potentially not great but we are building a utility room behind our kitchen units which is quite a large space (3.5m x 2.75m) which would allow units on all walls so it would comfortably house the washer, dryer, hoovers, drying racks etc but definitely with room to spare. You will enter through the kitchen cupboard doors so it will look almost like a hidden second kitchen.

I’ve tried and failed to incorporate a separate pantry that works well on the house plans because you would end up with a room, in a room, in a room if you see what I mean as there is not enough space for a separate opening from the kitchen.

The kitchen is big enough to not necessarily need one but it would be handy for storing appliances that aren’t used every day and possibly to have a cupboard with tins. I’m thinking if we put actual units in with doors (rather than an open shelved design) this can work?

We have a similar layout but with large shelves in the room so you can see everything quickly. We have things like flour, rice, pasta etc in large kilner jars and it works well.

I've got some full height cupboards in my utility for appliances, overflow stock, suncream, etc etc. It works perfectly well, I don't understand why you think it wouldn't really unless I'm missing something?

The only possible drawback I can see is potential humidity.

In which case you could consider extractor fan/ dehumidifier.

I used to have some humidity and just used to open the window slightly. However when I needed a new tumble dryer I went for a heat pump one. It is fabulous, and doesn’t create any humidity as all as the heat stays in the machine rather than being thrown out into the room.

I keep food and have a second freezer in my utility as well as having the washing machine, sink etc. Why wouldn't you? Most people aren't lucky enough to have a utility and have the washing machine in the kitchen.

Sounds fine to me, makes sense to make use of the storage space. 👍

The odd thing I cannot get my head around is the placing of a toilet in a utility room. 😖
Saw this a couple of times when looking at new builds a couple of years ago. One developer had really decent sized utility rooms (plenty of cupboard space, worktops, room to iron etc) but tucked away in the corner was a toilet. The idea of a toilet in the same room as all the clean washing/ironing just didn't work for us.
Luckily I don't think it is a widespread trend. 🤞

We decided rather than do this in utility we have used a section of the garage as it’s cool and dark
