Walk in shower - 1200 x 800 - too small?

Title probably says it all.

My ensuite is 1200 x 2700.
I'm doing a refit and having a layout in line with the image (tall cabinet represents the soil stack, and am not having the wall cabinet above the wc).
Door opens out of the room.

In order to get the towel radiator next to the loo I was going for a sliding door (currently have a panel & hinged door as per picture and this arrangement wouldn't open with the towel radiator).

Just wondering whether I could have a walk in shower, with flipper panel, rather than the sliding door.

Would mean moving the shower gubbins over the the opposite wall from where is is currently but apparently this isn't a big job.

Anyone got a similar arrangement in a 1200 x 800 (or 760) space able to comment?

We had a walk in one that was bigger, but there was never any water at all in the walk part. I think you’d be fine.

We have one which is that size, with the folding side panel. It’s fine. We are average sized adults and can move arms around quite comfortably. My plumber planned it for me, said he had fitted that configuration a few times.

I anogised for ages when choosing my walk in shower size. Mine is 900 x 1200cm, but I almost wish I had gone for 800. X 1200cm as mine is very wide.

Does the toilet pass building regs being in front of the door? I suspect you'll need to get a very tight to wall design. Avoid the cupboard style fittings to maximise space.

Toilet is there currently and doesn't obscure the door, new toilet with cupboards will be about the same depth, so that's not an issue.

We have a similar shaped shower room, a bit longer than yours.

We have a 1000x1000 shower with a sliding door, and it's absolutely fine. Loads of room inside it.

Our towel rail is in a similar place to yours, as is our basin, but we probably have more space between the shower door and the basin. The shower door opens the opposite side to the towel rail.

Thanks for the comments.
It isn't the size of the shower itself that I wondering about, existing shower is the same size and I have no problem with it at all.

What I'm wondering is whether a walk-in shower with the flipper panel works in this space.

Also, are these type of showers colder than a fully enclosed one as the humid air is escaping more quickly? It is always noticeable how much cooler the room is when you open the shower door afterwards.

Well that’s an interesting question re colder. Could well be. I hadn’t thought that was the reason - I have a very powerful ceiling extractor which seems to be cold, but yes, they may well be.

Put it this way, I tried a shower steamer in it the other day - couldn’t get a scent of it, whereas the same thing in the other shower was noticeable. It

Dearg thanks!
Hmm... Will think on it!

We have a walk in shower. It has no door at all. It’s a full on wet room basically with a 1m long glass fixed panel you walk around to shower. It doesn’t feel cold as whole room warms up. We also have underfloor heating added which I recommend as it dries the floor tiles quickly.

Froniga · 23/02/2024 20:38

Please can you tell me what a shower steamer is?
Thanks

We have the same and not cold at all. Also have underfloor heating.

Hmm, now I'm in 2 minds about it!

I think in a bigger space, where I could have a longer side panel, I'd definitely go for it.
I'm just not sure in the smaller space.

The side panel in my current shower is always very wet after a shower, so it would definitely need the flipper panel.

  • I won't be having underfloor heating.
  • It is only a small room, so not much space for the heat to go anyway. I suppose a walk in shower is not much different to the shower over the bath in my main bathroom. I DO feel colder showering in there, but the room is much larger so more space for the humid air to dissipate into.
  • It would involve more plumbing work (we are doing it all ourselves) rather than just new shower gubbins onto existing pipework.
  • It looks cleaner, and far less nooks & crannies to clean than a sliding door.

Maybe another bathroom shower visit required!

It’s like a bath bomb sort of thing. It’s supposed to dissolve in the steam of the shower and infuse the air with some aromatherapy scent - like peppermint if you want to wake up, or lavender if you want to relax.
I bought some after reading about them on a MN Christmas thread. I find you need a very long shower to get them going, and then they are at best, underwhelming.
Honestly, not worth it.

Froniga · 24/02/2024 14:01

Thanks, I’ve never heard of them. Won’t bother looking as I don’t stay long in the shower - Cost of Living has made me very conscious of cost of the heating for hot water.
