Hi, we're thinking of moving to Colliers Wood but want advice on what the area's like. Is it safe etc? Thanks

Yeah its fine. About 20 years ago I lived Clapham way and Colliers Wood was considered a bit rough, but honestly now people have had to move further down the tube line to afford things it's much more gentrified.

LovingLimeMember · 23/02/2024 18:26

I wouldn't say it's particularly nice but it's ok. I think Tooting is nicer

BananaSplitsss · 23/02/2024 18:29

Nah. Imo it’s not great . I was born and bred up the road in Wimbledon. Left London 15 years ago. It’s a shite hole now.

Again … IMO.

As PP said, 10-15 years ago, not nice, but it's ok now. You do have a very main road basically going through the whole of it, with a huge retail park off it, but the roads around that are fine. Plus Merton Abbey Mills is great for little restaurants.

burnoutbabe · 23/02/2024 18:56

It's great.
Handy for Wimbledon or Tooting and choice if 2 tube lines.
There are tons of restaurants within 10-15 min walk
It's obviously cheaper than places further up tube line
But you could actually get a seat on the tube in morning rush hour!

I lived there until just over a year ago and loved it. I thought it was a pretty friendly part of London even though it's definitely not beautiful. You won't do most of your shopping there but Wimbledon is close by and I used to go to Kingston a lot. I also had good experiences with St George's hospital and the GP surgery where I was registered.

It’s ok although pretty expensive now for what it is. Main pros are proximity to other areas & tube. What’s your budget?

AnotherNC22 · 24/02/2024 11:00

I live near here. Pros are that its handy for the tube, you can nearly always get a seat, some lovely primaries and side roads off the main road and its still cheaper than Tooting and Wimbledon. Merton Abbey Mills has some nice pubs and eating places, plus there are some nice cafes on the high street and handy shops on the retail park. Walking distance to National Trust Morden Hall Park, which is lovely. We tend to go to Wimbledon or Tooting if we want to go out for dinner though.

Downsides are the traffic - absolutely awful and blocks all the bus routes up as well, Merton Council dont really invest in CW or Mitcham in comparison to Wimbledon so its a bit run down in places with a lot of litter, the high street is right next to the main road, which is a bit grim. I wouldnt say it feels less safe to me than other parts of London ive lived in, but it has the usual complaints on the local facebook group.

If you are looking at specific roads, you could join the FB group ("colliers wood news and views") and ask if anyone has any views?

Weve been here 5yrs and will probably move in another 5 for when we are thinking about secondary schools for our kids, but otherwise we've had no complaints.

You can probably sum it up as well, London. Busy, noisy, some nice bits, some nasty bits. I have lived around there in the past. It was ok. Never felt any particular danger, but plenty of chavs around, especially if you take a walk up towards the Wetherspoons at the bottom of Tooting. Large student population nearby, though all medical types, and if you like curry’s you’re well served just up the road. I would neither encourage or discourage you to live there. You’re gonna pay a decent amount for anything and for me I’d head further out and get a larger property, but your choice.

Tootingbec · 24/02/2024 11:53

Lived there about 18 years ago - loved it despite it being grubby and dominated by the A24. It is not a place of beauty but easy access to Wimbledon and you always get a seat on the tube in the morning.

Not sure about prices now but it was definitely better value than Tooting and yet just a 10 min walk down the road.

It had a benign unremarkable feel to the place - not scary or unsafe - lots of people just going about their business. Quite a few nurses/junior doctors live there as very close to St George’s

No idea about schools as was a childless singleton back then!

We lived there when we first moved to London (2009...2 bed flat for £800/month 😁) Love merton abbey mills, the big sainsburys/m&s is v.helpful, nice walk/run by the river through to morden hall park. You also get an SW19 postcode 😂
The northern line is good and you can always get on at rush hour, sometimes even get a seat unlike the Clapham stations where you have to wait to get on! If northern line is down a bus to Wimbledon is easy. We lived in Wimbledon a few years later and love that, but the restaurants in Tooting are also easy from CW.
I haven't been there for a while (we left London) but from what I remember it was great.

Cheryl108 · 24/05/2024 18:43

where are you living now? I've come back to London after 30 years being away, only to study, and it has become a shit hole. I was looking at a place in Colliers Woods as it was a reasonable price. Currently in Leyton Lea Bridge but I am on the road it's too noisy. Any suggestions? I don't know anyone in Colliers Wods.

burnoutbabe · 24/05/2024 19:10

I visit there regularly and I like it. Feels safe walking from tube at night as always busy.
