What do people suggest for this hallway? I don’t like the knotty pine but having just been vacuuming another house and noticing how paint on doors, door surrounds and skirting boards chips unless very skilfully applied I think it’s best to leave the woodwork and try and create a more modern look with walls, floor and stair carpet. All the woodwork is stripped throughout and it all needs redecorating (water damage) so it really is a blank canvas bar the 70s woodwork
I’ve got another thread about this house and I really am clueless…

Don't do anything until you get a bannister fitted, that work will damage what you have. Then you'll have to paint to get it all to match. Is the current wood vanished or oiled? Might be hard to paint over.

It’s varnished and we’re not adding a bannister- checked building regulations and the one on the other side suffices! The wood is varnished, so I was planning on painting the walls to tone it down.

Funnily enough the current carpet and wall colour are exactly the same as ours. We’ve got white paintwork (and a bannister) though, and I’m currently working on DH to go more yellow for the walls and accent with black.

You could go for quite a dramatic dark teal with lots of artwork - that would really pop against the dark background.

Thanks @NewFriendlyLadybird
White is so much nicer than the wood isn’t it, but it does chip and the cost of painting it all would be ruinous, so I’m really looking for a way of living with it! Here’s another pic of the stripped wood throughout. I’ve tried Pinterest and google image search but it seems no one is keeping the woody wood look!

If you are lifting the carpet to replace it, do the painting then.

My grandparents had that exact stair set up... my grandad died when he fell down the stairs and broke his neck.

It might technically be legal but its NOT safe.

I’m so sorry @housethatbuiltme

The stairs will not meet building regs in their current form, due to the open drop on left - take care to check it out - e.g. 'guarding of stairs'.
